Paul Watson: From Nothing to Something

By: Jeff Meadows
Most of the times, players that are ranked in the Top 50-100 players in their classes have been discovered from playing in TOP REGIONAL/NATIONAL AAU TOURNAMENTS or CAMPS and have been in their ranking positions from the time they were in 8th or 9th grade, which gives you an idea of how hard it is for those players who have yet to attend a TOP REGIONAL/NATIONAL AAU TOURNAMENT or CAMP to crack the “Top 100 Rankings” in their respective classes.
Attending “MAXIMUM EXPOSURE EVENTS” and playing on a TOP REGIONAL/NATIONAL AAU TEAM that is featured in TOP REGIONAL/NATIONAL AAU TOURNAMENTS you are guarenteed to be seen by TOP REGIONAL/NATIONAL SCOUTS/SCOUTING SERVICES. As a player, if you have enough GAME and a good SKILL-SET, being a late bloomer, there’s always a possibility that you can break onto the scene by attending a MAXIMUM EXPOSURE EVENT and PUTTING IN WORK in front of the TOP SCOUTS/SCOUTING SERVICES which gives you (player) a opportunity to crack the RANKINGS in your respective class. Well, that's exactly what class of 2013’s 6’7 (W) Paul Watson has done. Paul had never before played in a MAXIMUM EXPOSURE EVENT. “That was my first MAXIMUM EXPOSURE EVENT” said Paul Watson about playing in the FULL COURT PRESS EASTER CLASSIC in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago “There’s a big difference when you play with high caliber players like this on a regular basis”.
Before, Paul played on a local AAU team in his hometown of Phoenix, AZ that was, until he was discovered by Compton Magic’s President, Etop Udo-Ema. “Man, I was really surprised when I watched this kid play” said Etop Udo-Ema of Paul Watson “With his skill set & abilities, I just couldn’t believe, that not very many people heard of this kid”.
Paul’s freshman year, he went from the freshman team to the varsity team throughout the season but this year, Paul averaged 20 pts, 8 rebs & 4 assist, not bad numbers for a sophomore. After watching this young man play for just a little bit, I knew right away that I had missed one.
Here’s my TAKE/PLAYER EVALUATION on Paul Watson
Paul is a long, rangy, wiry & athletic talent. Paul is a true (W) who handles the ball very well for a player his size, Paul can also stroke it from the outside with consistency. Another one of Paul’s big assets is his athleticism; Paul has the knack for going up & over defenders for the frequent throw down. Defensively Paul is just as good, with his versatility, very good agility, length & court awareness, Paul is usually a problem for opposing teams on the defensive end. Paul is DEFINITELY AMONG THE TOP 1-3 PROSPECTS IN THE CLASS OF 2013, IN THE STATE OF ARIZONA! I look for Paul to continue to improve & eventually become a HIGH-MID MAJOR PROSPECT at WORST.
THE ARIZONA EXIDOUS
Paul Watson is yet another TOP PROSPECT from the state of Arizona that has exited the state to go and play for the Los Angles based Compton Magic, who has had a few Arizona TOP PROSPECTS over the years. “It all comes down to can your program provide players with MAXIMUM EXPOSURE opportunities” said Compton Magic’s President Etop Udo-Ema.
Past prospects that have left the state of Arizona to play for the Compton Magic include: Brandon Burnett (Indiana St.), Mike Perez (UTEP), Collin Woods (Cal St. Irvine), DJ Shumpert (University of Arizona/San Bernardino College), TJ Burke (Cal Riverside), Jahii Carson (ASU) etc. Current players that have left the state of Arizona to play AAU ball for the Compton Magic include: Class of 2013/6’4 (PG) Jaron Hopkins (Basha HS), Class of 2013/6’7 (W) Paul Watson (Paradise Valley HS), Class of 2014/6’11 (C) Isaac Allen (Mesa HS), Class of 2015/6’2 (CG) Jalen Jenkins, Class of 2014/6’6 (W/F) Andre Shumpert (Santa Rita HS).
“Again, I couldn’t be any happier than I am now” said Paul Watson “Having the opportunity to play for the Compton Magic is a dream come true”. Etop Udo-Ema says, and I quote “At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is making sure that Compton Magic players get scholarships”!
