Introducing Jeronne Maymon

A number of players have boosted their stock tremendously with their play this spring, but none have been more impressive than Madison, WI, junior Jeronne Maymon

The first time we saw Maymon play was in late March at the Milwaukee Madness Showcase and we were blown away by what we saw.

Here was a player that was strong enough to bang inside, yet skilled enough to play either guard spot; an effortless scorer that was an equally dominant defender; a kid that could handle, shoot, slash, finish, rebound and block shots--- all while talking on his cell phone.

Okay, maybe that’s a stretch, but there was no-doubt that the player that we were watching was the total package... even if we'd never heard of him (how a talent like this slips through the cracks, is beyond us.  I mean, just this past season, he was named Wisconsin’s Player of the Year… as a junior, for crying out loud!).

We spoke with the 6-foot-6, 235-pound athlete after the game and he told us that although he had a number of mid-major scholarship offers and had received some high-major attention, he had yet to receive a single high-major offer.

Not one.

We smiled and thought,
“Just wait, young man… your going to have plenty.”

Fast-forward five weeks and Jeronne Maymon is now one of the hottest names in the recruiting world.

Since that weekend in Milwaukee, Maymmon has put up monster numbers at three straight national events-- the Real Deal on the Hill, the King James Classic, and the Bill Hensley Memorial Classic-- and when you have a good showing at tournaments like those, scholarship-offers tend to follow.

Just in the last couple of weeks, Southern Cal, Marquette and Iowa State have all offered and we are hearing that Tennessee is close to pulling the trigger, as well.  We expect him to have dozens of high-major offers by the time camps roll-around.

But, Maymon is in no hurry.

In fact, the school that he looks forward to receiving an offer from the most-- the University of Kentucky-- hasn’t made a move, yet.

But, if they do decide to offer (and as good as he’s been playing, it’s going to be hard for them not to), don’t be surprised to see the Wildcats jump to the top of his list.

It just so happens that the Maymon’s consider Kentucky assistant-coach, Tracy Webster (who recruited Maymon while an assistant at Illinois), a family friend.  And having a family friend on the staff to look out for Jeronne, could be a huge selling point for the Cats if they ever do decide to offer.

For now though, Maymon is just looking forward to his summer and playing AAU ball with Antoine Walker’s Illinois Bobcats.  The team travels to Chicago this weekend for the GBOA North tournament where they have hooked The Family (Detroit) in their very first game.

If anyone is in the Chicago area this weekend and wants to check out some top-notch hoops action, the GBOA North tournament (at the University of Illinois-Chicago) is the place to be and it just so happened that the last time the Bobcats played The Family, Maymon scored almost 40 points!

As for those of us that are somewhere else in the world other than Chicago this weekend, here is a link to some video footage we caught of Maymon while we were in Milwaukee.

The kid’s a phenom.
