One on One With Jay Canty

We recently caught up with 6’4 wing Jay Canty of Jamestown (NC) Ragsdale High, and he gave us an update on how his freshman season went and what we can expect from him this spring and summer.

Canty is widely considered one of the top wing prospects nationally in the class of 2010.  He was one of the top performers at the adidas Phenom 150 camp last summer and recently put in a good showing at Dave Telep’s Carolina Challenge.

HR: How did your freshman season at Ragsdale High go and what were your stats?
Jay:
“My high school season went really good this year.  I averaged about 15 points a game.”

Was the transition from middle school ball to high school ball what you expected?
“Yes it was a lot of bigger and stronger guys but i was able to hang in there and just play my game.”

What would you say the strengths of your game are? Weaknesses?
“My strengths are my ability to drive to the basket and scoring baskets, and I would say my weakness is my lack of defense.”

What AAU team are you playing with this spring and summer?
“Well right now I’m doing a few tournaments with the Gaters 17U and I will be going back down with my 15U Gaters team and completing my AAU season with them.”

Have you played in any AAU events yet this spring? How did your team and you do in the event?
“Yes I have, I’ve played with the Gaters 17U.  We did pretty good in the Charlie Weber and I averaged about 16 points a game.”

What tournaments and camps are you looking forward to attending this summer?
“Well right now I’m just looking forward to some of the biggest camps and biggest tournaments and playing with more athletic guys out there.”

What college team do you normally cheer for?
“Carolina.”

Which colleges have shown you the most interest so far? Do you have any favorites?
“Well I’ve received a few letters but I’m still gonna keep working hard until it gets to the point when i can really make a decision.”

Who is your favorite NBA player? Do you model your game after any pros?
“I model my game after Tracy McGrady and he's my favorite.”

Who is the biggest role model in your life and why?
“My family and God.  They are the ones who inspire me to do the best and be the best I can be.”

What would you like to accomplish in your high school career?
“I would like to be one of the kids everyone remembered saying that I was a good and respectful person.”

Shout outs?
"I would like to shout out my parents Tim and Stacey Frye, my best friends Jonothan F., Quddus B., Sean M., and all of my high school and AAU coaches."
