Prime Time Shootout: Saturday Wrap Up

Trenton, NJ-On Saturday at the Prime Time Shootout, Lance Stephenson (pictured) would turn in one of the most impressive performances of the season when he scored 35 points to go along with 17 boards in helping Lincoln upset New York rival Rice.  Other highlights include St. Patrick’s win over Oak Hill and a big game by the nation’s top ranked senior big man, Greg Monroe.

Lincoln, NY- 75
Rice, NY- 68

6’5 junior Lance Stephenson turned in the most impressive performance of the event when he scored 35 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to help #12 Lincoln (USA Today) upset #7 Rice, 75-68.

Stephenson scored 15 points in the first quarter alone to help Lincoln start the game on an 18-4 run, but Rice came roaring back in the second half thanks to outstanding guard play from 6’0 UConn-signee Kemba Walker and 6’4 junior Durand Scott.

With just over a minute left, Scott nailed his third 3-pointer of the game to get Rice to within two points, at 65-63, but their comeback attempt would fall short as Lincoln’s 5’8 junior Darwin Ellis hit five key free throws in the final seconds to secure the win for his team.

Ellis finished the game with 14 points, while Rice was led by Walker’s 23 points and Scott’s 17.

St. Patrick’s, NJ- 63
Oak Hill Academy, VA- 54

The nation’s top ranked junior point guard, Dexter Strickland (committed to North Carolina), got the best of the nation’s top ranked senior point guard, Brandon Jennings (Arizona-signee), by helping #13 St. Patrick’s knock off #11 Oak Hill Academy, 63-54.

Strickland scored 17 points to go along with a handful of assists and rebounds, while his 6’6 junior teammate Paris Bennett chipped in with 16 points.

Brandon Jennings scored 20 of his game-high 27 in the second half, but he got little help from his teammates as 6’1 sophomore Pe'shon Howard was Oak Hill’s second-leading scorer with only seven points.

American Christian, PA-73
Rancocas Valley, NJ- 48

6’1 5th year senior Jeremiah Kelly hit four three pointers to open the game and 6’0 junior Lamont Jones (a Louisville-recruit) hit six 3-pointers in the 3rd quarter to help American Christian to a 73-48 win over Rancocas Valley.  Jones was the game’s leading scorer with 25 points.

American Christian’s big-name player, 6’5 senior Tyreke Evans, turned in a disappointing performance and finished with only seven points.

Rancocas Valley was led by 6’0 senior Andre Byrdsong’s 19 points.

St. Benedict’s, NJ- 77
Our Savior New American, NY- 63

6’9 Louisville-recruit Samardo Samuels scored 25 points and 6’1 junior Tamir Jackson scored 26 to help St. Benedicts to a 77-63 win over Our Savior New American.  6’8 junior Greg Echenique, who is considering Miami (Fl.) along with Maryland, Rutgers, Penn, Pitt, Duke and Notre Dame, chipped in with 14 points and a number of impressive rebounds.

Our Savior New American was led by 6’4 senior Gerardo Suero’s 27 points.

Helen Cox, LA- 62
Whitney Young, IL- 58

After leading by double digits for much of the second half, Helen Cox survived a late rally by Whitney Young to hold on for a 62-58 victory.  The Cougars were led by 6’10 Georgetown-signee Greg Monroe’s 24 points while 6’10 senior Trevon Flores added 18.

Whitney Young was led by 5’8 sophomore Ahmad Starks’ 21 points, but UCF-bound AJ Rompza, a 5’10 point guard, was equally impressive scoring 12 points and dishing out numerous assists.
