Peach Jam Update
North Augusta, SC- The biggest story in Augusta so far has to be the commitments that Wake Forest received from the Georgia Stars duo of Al-Farouq Aminu (pictured) and Tony Woods.
Tony Woods had a breakout performance at the Lebron James Skills Academy, where he was one of the top big men at the camp, and Aminu is widely considered a top-10 rising senior nationally. They combined for 21 points in a win over the SYF Players today.
The Deacons now have three All-American caliber frontcourt players in their 2008 recruiting class with the addition of Aminu and Woods. Wake Forest already has a commitment from Ty Walker, who is one of the nation’s best 7-footers.
Team Texas Earns Lone Star State Bragging Rights
Team Texas overcame a double-digit second half deficit to beat Houston Hoops 69-62 in a pool game earlier today. The winners were led by Willie Warren’s 25 points, but it was the late game heroics of Rotnei Clarke that propelled Team Texas to victory. Clarke hit two crucial 3-pointers and scored on a floater to help his team’s comeback.
Elijah Johnson had a big first half for Houston Hoops scoring 13 points but he was shut-out after the break. Jeremy Green and Tommy Mason-Griffin combined for 31 points.
*Although we didn't arrive until today, we recieved word that Willie Warren lit up Mean Streets for 45 points in a game yesterday.
16U Noteworthy Performances
6’9 big man DeMarcus Cousins of the Birmingham Storm is the highest rated prospect in the 16U division. His team lost an afternoon game to Tennessee YOMCA, but Cousins had a monster game, scoring 32 points.
6’6 wing Tevin Baskin of the New York Gauchos caught our attention with his athleticism, ability to put the ball on the floor, and activeness around the rim. He will likely be recruited at the highest level.
We first noticed 5’8 DeShaun Cooper two years ago when he made our list of the best 20 players at the 13U AAU Nationals. He is now a young (for his class) rising junior playing for the St. Louis Eagles and he had a fine performance today when he scored 12 points to lead his team past a tough Peach Jam Select squad.
Some players to keep an eye on that play for Peach Jam Select include 6’0 Brandon Curry, 6’6 Heath Houston, 6’6 Bryan Narcisse, and 6’7 Kadeem Batts
Boo Williams knocked off California Supreme behind 22 points from 6’5 Marshawn Powell. 6’3 Donte Hill and 6’9 DeShawn Painter combined for 27 points for the winners. California Supreme was led by 6’9 phenom Jeremy Tyler’s 15 points.
