Peach Jam Day1 Morning Session

By: James Mulcahy

Day1 Pool Play:

17U 11:30 a.m. games

Team Texas vs. Boo Williams

*This game was one of the biggest matchups of the morning as both teams are considered two of Nike's top travel teams and within the big team matchup there were some some very good individual matchups as well like Kendall Marshall(2010) vs. KC Ross-Miller(2010) and Marshawn Powell(2009) vs. Roger Franklin(2009).

The Kendall vs. KC mathcup never really materialized as both guards seemed to somewhat cancel each other out. Both were having success penetrating but neither could seem to finish with much consistency so each guard went to plan B and starting getting the rock to their supporting cast ie...Powell and Franklin.

Marshawn Powell and the whole Boo Williams team had a size advantage over Team Texas and they took advantage of it throughout the game. Powell and DeShawn Painter both seemed to be able to post up wherever they wanted and get the ball in spots where they could score easily. Powell finished with the best game and probably looked like the best player on the floor.

Roger Franklin for Team Texas just came off an impressive performance at the Lebron James Skills Academy and he seemed to pick up where he left off. At 6'6 the kid has a descent mid-range game and with his strong build he can play bigger than he is in the post and likes to bang. He held is own as well as he could against the big guys from Boo.

In the end this game was won by point guard play and in this case it just happen to be KC Ross-Miller who came up big at the end of the game as he stole an inbounds pass and finished an easy layup which very well could have been the game winner but Kendall did his job on the other end and got to the free-throw line and sank both free ones to tie the game up at 63 all but after a few hand checks by Boo Williams which had fouls to give KC finally got the ball in his hands with around 5.7 seconds left in the game and he didn't disappoint, the guard who has struggled all game with his shot took 3-4 dribbles to his right and pulled up and sank the game winning 3 pointer right on the end of the court his future coach Billy Gillispie was seated. We asked KC after the game how that one felt and he replied " Man it was nice, I couldn't get anything to go in all game so it was about time." Final score was Team Texas 66 Boo Williams 63.

Head Coaches in attendance: Billy Gillispie and Roy Williams

NY Gauchos vs. Wisconsin Elite

We didn't get to see much of this game but Wisconsin Elite did come out on top 65-62.

Head Coaches in attendance: Jamie Dixon, Billy Donovan, Matt Painter, Roy Williams, Jerry Wainwright and Andy Kennedy.

Team Florida vs. Meanstreets

This was a close game throughout and with 2.7 seconds left and Team Florida down 2pts(51-49) Team Florida gurd Ben Eblen got all the way to the whole for a wide open layup to tie the game but at the last second Okaro White, a big for Team Florida, touched the ball while it was in the cylinder and it was ruled a goaltending and Meanstreets held on for the victory.

Head Coaches in attendance: Sean Miller, Billy Donovan and Donnie Jones

16U 1:00 p.m. Games

Team Final vs. Arkansas Wings

Michael Gilchrist(2011) continued his solid play from Lebron James Academy where he dominated the competition and got his team a victory over the Wings by a final score of 61-57. Other standouts from this game were 6'1 PG Tyreek Duren(2010) for Team Final and 6'8 PF Daniel Broughton(2010) for the Arkansas Wings.

Head Coaches in attendance: Jamie Dixon, Roy Williams, John Calipari, Bob Huggins, Tom Izzo and John Beilein.

Team Stat vs. Team Melo

We got our first look at the newest member of the Florida Gators and with Billy Donovan and half his staff sitting at center court Austin River's played a solid game and showed glimpses of why he is a high D-1 player. Rivers has a very high I.Q. just like another PG Coach Donovan has at the moment (Nick Calathes) who by the way works out and plays alot with the young River's which can only be a good thing for everyone involved with the Gators. Not much happened in this game as Team Stat blew out Team Melo by a score of 70-46 but we look forward to seeing the young guard play again in a more contested game later in this tournament.

Head Coaches in attendance: Billy Donovan, Sean Miller, Bruce Pearl, Tom Izzo, Donnie Jones, Jeff Capel and Frank Haith.

YOMCA Memphis Bulldogs vs. Team Texas

YOMCA won in a blowout 69-43

Head Coaches in attendance: Matt Painter, Bruce Weber

Drew Gordon Soldiers vs. Albany City Rocks

This game was another blowout at Albany City Rocks won 86-61 over the Drew Gordon Soldiers.

16U 2:15 Games

Boo Williams vs. Peach Jam Select

With the addition of Justin Anderson(2012) this looks like the best 16U team in the tournament and they got off to a strong start by blowing the doors of Peach Jam Select. Anderson and 6'6 F Travis McKie(2010) were both having very strong games. McKie was playing like a man around the basket and showing off his athleticism and Anderson just brings a certain energy to the floor when he is on the floor, even if he is not scoring he is always doing something to help his team out whether its the first one off the bench congratulating teammates after a timeout or patting them on the back and telling them to keep their head up, this kid is full of energy and a joy to be around and watch play and will be even more of a superstar in the future. When we left this game Boo was up 66-25.

Head Coaches in attendance: Al Skinner, Seth Greenberg and Donnie Jones

NY Gauchos vs. The Family

The Gauchos pulled out a close one in the final minute and won a low scoring affair 35-31.

Head Coaches in attendance: Donnie Jones, Al Skinner, Tom Izzo, John Beilein, Jamie Dixon, John Calipari, Sean Miller, and Bruce Pear.

Georgia Stars vs. Alabama Challenge

We got another look at one of our favorite 15u players from this tournament last year in 5'10 PG Matthew Brabham(2010) and we once again saw some good things from the young guard. Brabham has very long arms and is more of a slasher but once in the lane he is great at finding the open man even if it's at the last moment. This kid still seems to be getting slept on but maybe after another strong performance at a tournament like this that will all change. Georgia stars win this one by a final score of 76-54.

Head Coaches in attendance: Dennis Felton, Andy Kennedy, Donnie Jones, Bruce Pearl, Paul Hewitt and Mike Anderson.

We will have more updates after the evening session which starts at 6 p.m. and ends around 11 p.m.
