Peach Jam Day1 Evening Session

By: James Mulcahy

17U 6:00 p.m. Games

*Athletes First vs. Howard Pulley

There were alot of big names in this game such as Xavier Henry(2009), Daniel Orton(2009), and Terrence Boyd(2009) for Athletes First and Royce White(2009) for Howard Pulley.

As expected Xavier Henry was the best player on the court, he showed he is an impossible match-up on the offensive end and scored all over the court at will. His pull-up jumper is getting better by the day and any defender caught between him and the basket when he has his mind set on driving is going to have a bad day. Xavier finished with a day1 high of 36pts along with 3rbs and 3ast.

Terrence Boyd also has a good game in which he showed off his strength and an improved first step. Boyd loves to initiate contact on his way to the rim and has the hang time and strength to finish almost every time, he finished with 16pts and 3rbs.

Daniel Orton had a quiet game due to foul trouble even though alot of them seemed to be pretty bad calls, nevertheless he finished with 2pts and 5 fouls.  Orton gave us a school list of UCLA, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, UConn, Ohio St. and UK. When asked if he still considered UK his favorite he replied with a yes and told us he had no other favorites at the moment.

Royce White was equally as impressive in this game and showed he is also a tough matchup with his length and ball handling skills. White scored by taking numerous defenders to the hole off the dribble and even showed he was not afraid to play inside with the bangers as he had several nice post up moves and finishes on Orton. Royce finished with 8pts and 5rbs.

Mike Broghammer led the Howard Pulley team with 22pts and 7rbs before fouling out.

This game ended when 6'5 SG Carrington Tankson (Howard Puley) drove to the hole, drew the defenders and dished it off to 6'8 PF Shantrell Henderson (Howard Pulley)  for a wide open, game winning layup. Final score was Howard Pulley 75 Athletes First 73.

*Boo Williams vs. Team Melo

This game gave us our second matchup of the day that included two of the top guards in the 2010 class in Kendall Marshall(Boo Williams) and Josh Selby(Team Melo) but once again the top guards seemed to cancel themselves out and rely on their supporting cast and in this case it was all Boo Williams over Team Melo with a final score of Boo- 88 Team Melo- 53.

Boo Williams was led once again by 6'7 F Marshawn Powell(2009) who played like a man amongst boys for the second time today and finished with 17pts and 4rbs.

Without Cousins his Storm team feel to the Family by a final score of 62-60.

The winning Family team was led my Michigan St. commit Derrick Nix and his 10pts, and 8rbs.

*NY Gauchos vs. BABC

In what you would expect to be a hotly contested game it turned out to be nothing of the sort as BABC ran away with this one 85-68.

BABC had a very balanced attack which include 16pts, 6rbs, and 5ast for 6'7 SF Jamal Coombs(2009), 15pts for 6'4 W Gerald Coleman(2010), and 14pts, 4rbs, and 3ast for Phil Pressey(2010).

*South Carolina Ravens vs. Team Final

There is not much to say about this game but John Wall, John Wall, John Wall. The kid controls every game he plays in and keeps the D on their heels at all times. He still needs to improve his jump shot and his half court game but like an ex-pro player nearby stated "he's so good he's getting his teammates scholarships."

The Ravens were down one point in the final seconds of the game when Wall stepped to the free throw line with a chance to tie or essentially win the game but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and the Ravens lost the game 60-59. Maybe the kid is human after all.

John Wallfinished with 18pts, 12rbs, and 8ast in a losing effort but a great effort nonetheless.

Team Final had a hot-hand of their own in 6'3 G Khalif Wyatt who finished with a game-high 27pts, and 4rbs.

Head Coaches in attendance: Roy Williams, Jeff Capel, Travis Ford, Billy Gillispie, Bill Self, John Calipari, Sean Miller, and Bruce Pearl.
