Peach Jam Championship Game

By: James Mulcahy
Championship Game:
* BABC vs. Boo Williams
On paper these two teams seemed to stack up evenly. Neither side seemed to have too much of an advantage at any position and maybe on another day this would have been a closer game but on this night BABC just couldn' hit the side of barn. BABC shot 21-74 from the field for an awful 28.4% and it didn't get much better from behind the line as they went 4-20 as a team for a whopping 20%. As for Boo they went 24-49 from the field for a sizzling 49% and 4-8 3-pointers for 50%.
Even with BABC having more assist's and less turnovers than Boo it ultimately just came down to them having a horrible shooting night, plain and simple.
Boo still had to take care of business though and they did just that. Kendall Marshall definitely got the best of the matchup with fellow 2010 guard Phill Pressey as he took it right at Phil from the opening tip and got it going early. Marshall finished with 12pts, and 4ast but most of the good things he did in this game doesn't show up on stat sheets. Marshawn Powell, who you could probably give the MVP of this tournament to, was just a nightmare all week for opponents and it was no different in this game. Powell himself played with more energy than the whole BABC team combined and it showed with his 13pts, 9rbs, and 5blks. Powell just de-committed from Arkansas and this is looking more and more like a huge loss for John Pelphrey and the Razorbacks everytime this kid steps onthe court. Florida commit DeShawn Painter was very active around the basket the whole game where he made a living on put-backs and hook shots, he finished with 13pts, and 10rbs.Ricardo Ratliffe who has done his job just about every game this tournament finished with 9pts, and 5rbs. This win was a total team effort as Boo just had more energy from the start and looked like they wanted it more than the opponent.
This had to have been a disappointing loss for BABC and not just because they lost because Boo is a very worthy opponent but just how they came out flat and got down big early and had to fight back the whole game. Half-way through the first half they found themselves in a 21-8 hole and that's not an easy task to overcome against an evenly matched opponent. It just wasn't there for BABC on this night. Phil Pressey tried to push the action early but just couldn't get into a good rhythmn and nothing was falling near the basket either, he finished with 6pts, 2rbs, 5ast, and 3to's. Gerald Coleman, who has been a force this week and showed he deserves to be mentioned among the elite in he 2010 class, struggled to even get a good look at the basket, he finished with 9pts, and 3rbs. Alex Oriakhi has been looking like the player he was this time last year. He had bulked up and takes up more space in the paint as ever but things still didn't come easy to him in this game. It seemed like he was having to make 3-4 moves before even getting a shot off but he did hit the glass hard and came up with some big put backs and hit some short-range shots, he put in a workmans like effort of 14pts, and 7rbs. Jamal Coombs seemed to have the best idea of what he needed to do in this game and that was put your shoulder down, go hard and take it to Boo's big guys and he had the most success as he lead the team with 16pts, 8rbs, and 3ast.
In he end BABC tried to make a few runs but never got closer than the final score of 62-55.
