Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp

By: Rob Taylor

Now that the class 2009 is in the books, and 2010 is starting to take shape, talent evaluators are starting to turn their sights on the next wave of talented basketball players. To help them out, for the 3rd consecutive year, Dinos Trigonis brought a piece of his Pangos empire to the south. The Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp returned to Norcross, Georgia this year and once again hosted a nice collection of young talent.

This year the underclassman event attracted roughly 140 players to Meadowcreek High School in suburban Atlanta. Although a majority of the players were from Georgia, many players hailed from other states such as North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Virginia, Ohio, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kansas, Missouri, Texas and Connecticut.

In addition to the HoopsReport, Justin Young (Rivals), Evan Daniels (Scout), Pat Stanwood (Hoop Scoop), Tom Jones (TJ Hoops) and Ced Canty (Elite 75), were on hand to catch the action.

The format of the two-day event included skill and drill sessions on Saturday morning followed by two sessions of games in the afternoon and evening. The camp concluded on Sunday with two additional sessions of games followed by a Top 50 and Top 25 “Cream of the Crop” all-star games.

Below is a list of the top 25 performers at the event.

Kevin Ware (2011) 6’4 PG/WG Conyers (GA) Rockdale
Damion Wilson (2012) 6’4 WF Austell (GA) Pebblebrook

Top Performer Notes:

Kevin Ware, a 6’4 PG from Conyers, GA (Rockdale), has a chance to be big time. The best part of his game right now is his athleticism and his ability to reach and finish at the rim, but as he refines his shot, look for Ware’s game to reach another level. Ware already has a handful of high major offers with many more to follow.

Quddus Bello, a 6’3 WG from High Point, NC (Westchester), logged in a dominant performance at the camp. Bello’s athleticism was impressive as was his versatility and skill set. Although his all-star game performance was modest, his play though out the two-day event garnered him respect from fans and evaluators alike. Bello is widely considered one of the top sophomores in a loaded North Carolina.

Delonte “Bishop” Daniels, a 6’1 combo guard from Raleigh, NC (Leesville), has “off the charts” explosiveness. Reported to have a 44-inch vertical, Daniels wowed the crowd with powerful and creative dunks the entire weekend. Daniels can do more than dunk the ball; he has great speed and can get to the cup virtually anytime he wants to. Daniels is already sifting through a couple of scholarship offers from some high major programs.

For the second time in two weeks, I had the opportunity to evaluate Michael Gbinije, a 6’5 WG from Chester, VA (Evangel Christian). As was the case the last time I saw him, Gbinije was impressive. Yes Gbinije is athletic, skilled and can put up big numbers, but I was most impressed with his unselfishness and his willingness to distribute the ball. With that said, when Gbiniji decided he wanted to score, no one could stop him.

Stevie Taylor, a 5’9 PG from Gahanna, OH (Lincoln), established himself as one of the top floor generals in the event. Although Taylor has the ability to score the ball (in the all-star game he was the game’s second leading score with 14 points), his game is more about making players around him better, and leading his team. If great point guards are judged by wins, then Taylor should be considered one of the best, as he led his camp team to a 4-0 finish, then guided a loaded all-star team to a victory. Highly skilled and a difference maker is how I would describe Taylor’s game.

Nick Jacobs, a 6’8 PF from Atlanta (South Atlanta), was one of the surprise campers at the event. Already big and skilled, Jacob’s stock is on the rise.  Jacob’s 16 points in the all-star game was a game high, and capped off a very impressive showing.

Although he did not stand out in the all-star game, sophomore guard Ike Nwandu had a big camp. This solidly built combo guard was a bruiser, as he muscled his way to the rack at will. I originally thought Nwandu was just another athlete until he showed a solid skill set to go along with his explosiveness. Nwanu shoots well off the bounce, has a sold handle and is a willing and able passer. This kid had multiple dunks in every game I watched.

Jordan Price, a 6’4 freshman WG from Decatur, GA, was arguably the top freshman at the event.  Price is big and powerful and can put up big numbers once he gets on a role. Although he does not play above the rim, he is a force once he gets in the paint. Price has a solid handle for a guard his size and can knock down the midrange shot.

Shaq Patterson, a 6’4 freshman from Martinsville, VA (Magna Vista), is a physical specimen. Patterson already has a varsity ready frame as well as a varsity ready game. Patterson is a slasher who finishes well around the rim. Keep an eye on Patterson; he has a bright future.

Dinos Trigonis and Pat Stanwood put together another quality event, which gave a lot of young players an opportunity to get some quality exposure before the start of the high school basketball season. For those players who have not yet had enough basketball, Trigonis has 2 additional camps scheduled in the next two weeks, which should prove to be equally competitive. Stay tuned to HoopsReports for a recap of those events.
