Others Making Noise in the Class of 2013

By: Brett Blevins

"Make your name," was the challenge the campers had put to them by camp president Clay Dade, before the Saturday morning session.  The beautiful thing about the camp, is that it does exactly that.  It gives the kids a chance to make their name heading into high school, and it allows them to see where they stand nationally in the class of 2013.  As an athlete the "measuring stick" is the greatest thing in the world.  Constantly evaluating yourself allows you to enhance your strengths and focus on improving your weaknesses.  The campers are taking the challenge to heart.  Friday and Saturday saw effort in station work along with intense matchups during game sessions.

News and Notes:

Jahmel Taylor  6'0 G Los Angeles, CA

This strong and quick LA guard has been a handful to keep out of the lane.  He loves to slice into the paint using that right hand, and he has been unstoppable doing so.  Jahmel has shown decent ability to hit the jumpshot out to the arc, along with hitting contested pull-ups, runners, and getting all the way to the rack.  One of the most attractive things about his game is the ability to play North/South.  Coaches love guards that can put pressure on the defense, and Jahmel can definitely do that.  When he incorporates a left-handed finish and a few other things, lookout!

Johnathan Williams  6'8 F Memphis, TN

Williams is a thin, long, left-handed forward, more in the mold of a point forward.  He has decent handles and sees the floor well.  He is a decent midrange jumpshooter, that will improve as he gets stronger.  Williams has been swatting shots left and right.  He has displayed 8-12 foot pull-up game as well as a left hook dropping over his right shoulder.  He is a prospect with a very high ceiling.

Tyrek Coger  6'8 F/C Raleigh, North Carolina

The big bodied (240 lbs) Coger is a handful.  Too many times scouts concentrate on what a kid doesn't do well, rather than what he does do well.  Just because Coger doesn't rip the rim off athletically yet, he may not stand out.  Don't forget this young man has yet to take a high school class yet.  What he does do well, translates to any level.  Tyrek has very good hands and catches bad passes.  To go with good hands he has good feet and he knows how to get position.  He is very physical and constantly looking for post position, rebounding position, etc.  He has very good touch for a big man.  One of the few kids at the camp who likes to play with his back to the basket, although he has shown some signs of a limited face-up game.

Collin Harman   6'6 F Fishers, IN

The Indiana kid is a very skilled and athletic wing forward.  Add that to a good motor and you have one nice looking prospect.  Collin is very long, but also very coordinated and skilled.  He has good hands and finishes well on the break.  He plays fast, as shown by his ability to lead the break, but doesn't play out of control.  Today he got back into a play to block a shot from behind, again showing good effort.  I will be watching him more closely the next two days.

Marquan Botley  5'8 G Plano, TX

Marquan has set himself apart from other guards with his unselfishness and ability to create.  There are a lot of quick, end-to-end attacking, slashing, and great handling guards here, but not all of them know when and how to attack in the flow of the game.  Marquan is not only fast from baseline to baseline and destructive getting into the lane in the halfcourt, but he is a team guy.  He is not out for his own, so he rarely has taken a bad shot.  He has shown the ability to score, but his most impressive play today was a beautiful left-handed bounce pass on the break today.  You can tell this kid is well coached in school ball and with his traveling team the Texas Titans.

Carlos Burse  6'2 G Alpharetta, GA

Carlos is a well-built guard that can flat out shoot the ball.  He has shown consistency in knocking down open 15-19 foot jumpshots.  His strength allows him to mix it up on the glass a little bit as well.  He is another prospect we will be keeping a closer eye on to see how well he puts it on the floor amongst other things.

Kasey Hill  6'1 G Eustis, FL

Kasey has had a very nice showing at the camp thus far.  He has shown multiple dimensions to his game.  He his a good athlete that can lead the break, and he runs the break well.  He can finish at the rim and has a nice jumper.  His handle allows him to ignite the break, where he will also look to drop dimes.

Keith Langston  6'4 G Chicago, IL

Longer than most guards at the camp, Langston has shown well.  He has range beyond the arc and has knocked down some tough shots.  With people respecting his jumper, he has used his athletic ability to get to the rim.  Not only a good slasher, but also a good finisher at the rim.  At 6'4 he finishes over smaller defenders and can challenge bigger ones.

Jordan Wilson  5'9 G Los Angeles, CA

Another LA guard, Wilson has been impressive.  The kid is lightning quick with a great handle.  He has also been a disrupter on defense, playing hard and looking to get deflections with quick hands.  Although not his primary weapon, he will knock down the open jumper.  He may not be all of 5'9, but he is strong and plays a fearless game.

Many other kids have had good showings, so in no way is this list complete.  We will have more players of note later today, along with a full report of every kid at the camp later in the week.
