Nike EYBL Session 2/Day 3 RECAP

By: Jeff Meadows
Hampton, VA-Day 3 was a day filled with top match ups just Day 1 and 2 had but it was also a time to reflect on how certain players performed and what was my take on their weekend and now its time that I reveal my thoughts and views so enjoy Hoopsreport's Day 3 RECAP of the Nike EYBL Session 2.
GAME 1
Mac Irvin Fire vs St. Louis Eagles
In a game that was thought to have been a good match up on paper ended the way it started with Mac irvin Fire jumping out early and never looking back as they would cruise to an easy 74-48 victory. 6'5 (WF) Billy Garrett Jr. Really did his thing buy getting out on the break and scoring in transition quite often and 6'1 (PG) Kyle Davis was very effective offensively as well as he hit a few mid range jumpers and got into the lane while Hoopsreport's #1 player in the class of 2014 6'10 Jahlil Okafor posted 12 pts 5 rebs while 6'8 (F) Russell Woods added 10 pts 2 boards.
GAME OF THE DAY
CIA Bounce vs New Jersey Playaz
This great match up against two very capable teams added for lots of scouts and spectators. CIA Bounce great team effort and ballanced scoring attack wound up being too much for a very good New Jersey Playaz team buy coming away with a 69-55 win. CIA Bounce class of 2013, 6'3 (CG)) Tyler Ennis continues to go on a tare, scoring 20 pts grabbing 6 rebs and dishing out 2 assist, Ennis counterpart Andrew Wiggins put up 17 pts and snatched 8 rebs while Xavier Rathan-Mayes and Duane Notice both scored 12 pts. As for the New Jersey Playaz it was 6'3 (CG) JoeL hernandez who played well once again, scoring 14 pts and grabbing 3 rebs whille both Michael Young and Karron Davis scored 11 pts.
PLAYER ALERT
Those of us that are scouts, college coaches, aau coaches or just a plain old avid aau/grassroots basketball fan, you know all about the storied MAC IRVIN FIRE program that have produced countless amounts of college and NBA players. Russell Woods 6'8 (F) and 6'5 (W) Billy Garrett Jr. Are no exceptions as they made their marks this weekend. Russell Woods is a 6'8 VERSITILE, ATHLETIC (W/F) that has the knack for REBOUNDING on either end, scores in bounces as where Billy Garrett Jr. (6'5 (W) likes to slash to the basket for quick lay ups and dunks or take the defender of the dribble quite often to create for others. I had the pleasure of watching these two young man in a very competitive game when MAC IRVIN FIRE played against the GEORGIA STARS, a game that was LOADED with BIG TIME COLLEGE COACHES and FANS. The game was Nip & tuck the entire way, Garrett Jr. Did his usual which is cutting and slashing to the basket and he was effective but in this game it was the 6'8, MULT-TALENTED, MULTI-SKILLED Russell who did MAJOR DAMAGE down the stretch, scoring 4 quick baskets (off of put backs) which pretty much sealed the deal for a Mac Irvin victory. These two young ballers are BIG TIME PLAYERS that you should definitely look to hear from at the next level.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
This segment of PLAYER SPOTLIGHT will feature two YOUNG GUNS from the west coast, four 2013 TOP PROSPECTS and one 2014 guy that's FLAT OUT GETTING IT DONE! So kick back, relax and check out Hoopsreport's Nike EYBL Session 2 "PLAYER SPOTLIGHT" segment.
ELIJAH DUPLECHAN 5'10 (PG) D1 Pharaohs (2017)
Elijah had a pretty big weekend as he was a very vital piece to his D1 Pharaohs 15U squad getting all the way to the semi finals especially, considering the fact that he's only a 7th grader. Elijah got to the basket at will as he trumped top 10, 15U team the Houston Hoops. Elijah is a top prospect in the class of 2017 where, I guess you have to just log on to Hoopsreport in early June to find out.
CHRISTIAN ELLIS 6'2 (G) D1 Pharaohs (2016)
After watching numerous games and seeing numerous top prospects, Christian Ellis was definitely right at the top of the list of guards in the 15U Division and yes, he's only an 8th grader. Christian's attributes (6'2 190lbs, quick as a cat, strong etc) puts him in a class by himself not to mention that his game, bball IQ is already HIGH LEVEL. Christion is a TOP 10-25 PROSPECT IN THE CLASS OF 2016 where you might ask? We shall see in June.
JABARI BIRD 6'6 (W) Oakland Soldiers (2013)
Jabari Bird is an EXTREMELY FAST, EXTREMELY QUICK and EXTREMELY ATHLETIC (W) has a good amount of experience on the spring/summer circuit which is what he's going to have to revert to in order to make up for the lose of TOP PROSPECT TEAMMATE. Aaron Gordan for a length of time (due to a toe injury). In session 2 the Soldiers dropped 2 games (finishing the weekend 3-2, the last time they dropped multiple games in a month or the last time they've lost period was last July, when they lost in the quarterfinals of the NIKE PEACH JAM and later on that month, they were upset by Branch West, a VERY SOLID PROGRAM out of southern California at Dinos Trigonis, Las Vegas "Fab 48", which is an AMAZING STREAK considering the amount of games and tournaments that they play in. Jabari definitely has the ability and the weapons around him to get the Oakland Soldiers back walking straight after a fast start but somewhat slow finish but will he/they?
RATHAN XAVIER-MAYES 6'4 (W/G) CIA Bounce (2013)
Rathan, while playing on an EXTREMELY LOADED SQUAD, PUT IN MAJOR WORK ALL WEEKEND LONG! Rathan scored over 16 pts in atleast 3 out of the 5 games he played in this weekend. Rathan has a very good offensive package that is full of his many different ways to score which is what makes Rathan A MAJOR OFFENSIVE THREAT ANY TIME HE'S ON THE COURT!
TYLER ENNIS 6'3 (CG) CIA Bounce (2013)
Ennis is somewhat of a HYBRID (CG) from the stand point that he has a complete offensive game, score inside, score outside and is very athletic but at the same time he has a basic game which keeps him from getting out of control like most guards that are as athletic as he is. Ennis, like Wiggins and Rathan, is on a LOADED SQUAD IN CIA BOUNCE but still manages to put up very solid numbers each game. It's going to be very interesting to see how Ennis and his LOADED CIA BOUNCE TEAM FINISHES UP THE REMAINDER OF THE SPRING ON INTO THE SUMMER which if I had to choose today, I would chose them as the #1 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY IN THE 17U DIVISION HANDS DOWN.
ANDREW WIGGINS 6'8 (W) CIA Bounce (2014)
Wiggins is a RARE TALENT! Upon watching Wiggins its made known from the start that he is GIFTED PHYSICALLY and his SKILL LEVEL IS SUPERIOR. Wiggins pretty much played all 5 positions and played them well by hitting the mid range and deep ball with consistency (especially off the dribble) as well as getting to the lane and finishing all weekend long. As a scout, you quickly realize that Wiggins is one of those players that you don't see but every so often because he is a VERY SPECIAL PLAYER AND WILL MAKE A SERIOUS RUN AT THE HOOPSREPORT CLASS OF 2014 #1 PLAYER RANKING THIS JUNE.
JULIUS RANDLE 6'9 (F) Team Texas Titans (2013)
Julius Randle was simply AMAZING! Julius displayed his ability to DO EVERYTHING and DO IT BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE. His SPEED, SIZE (6'9, 245 lbs) QUICKNESS, BBALL IQ, TANACITY and CONTROLLED AGGRESSION PUTS HIM AT THE TOP OF THE CLASS OF 2013 LIST OF TOP PROSPECT. Defensively, Julius was probably the most impressive to me as he was able to defend guys 6-8 inches shorter than he and LOCK THEM DOWN OR FRUSTRATE THEM. Offensively, Julius was very DOMINANT or DOWN RIGHT BULLISH AT TIMES as he imposed his SUPERIOR, BRUTE STRENGTH on each and every opponent that he faced. Julius is the REAL DEAL and a VERY SPECIAL PLAYER that I look forward to watching this future "NEXT LEVEL"player develop even more and continue to improve as he ascends on to the NEXT LEVEL AND BEYOND.
JAHLIL OKAFOR 6'10 (C) Mac Irvin Fire (2014)
I was very impressed with Jahlil's play all weekend long as showed some unique and special qualities for a BIG, THICK POST PLAYER TO HAVE which is EXCELLENT FOOT WORK AND A VERY GOOD AND SOFT TOUCH FROM 15 feet in. Jahlil looked like a SEASONED VET as he performed quality post moves very patiently time and time again which often times forcing the opposing defenses to double down. Jahlil is as HIGH MAJOR AS YOU CAN GET OR BE and now the question becomes: "Does Jahlil remain #1 in Hoopsreport's class of 2014 National Player Rankings?
I hope you enjoyed our EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE of the Nike EYBL Session 2. Stay logged on for our END OF SPRING CLASSES OF 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 NATIONAL PLAYER RANKINGS ALONG WITH NATIONAL AAU TEAM RANKINGS AS WELL IN EARLY JUNE.
