Marshall Co. HoopFest
Riverdale (TN) vs. Lafayette (MO)
Lafayette’s 6-7 sophopmore star Tyler Griffey scored 10 first-half points but Riverdale still dominated the opening quarters and mounted a 40-20 lead by halftime. Riverdale’s 6-4 point guard Kevin Smith scored 9 points in the half.
The second half was much more evenly matched as the teams traded points, but Lafayette never could rally as Riverdale won the game 71-51.
6-3 junior Michael Young led the winners with 20 points and 7 rebounds and Kevin Smith finished with 12 points and 8 boards.
Lafayette’s Tyler Griffey finished with 17 points and 5 rebounds. He looks to be a possible high-major prospect at this point. He has good hands and catches the ball on the run well. Griffey still gets pushed around but will be more effective inside and on the boards as his body matures. We were impressed with his shooting touch as he knows how to elevate over defenders and hit close jumpers. He says that he is being recruited hard by Midwest schools like Kansas, Missouri, Purdue, and St. Louis.
Another sophomore forward to keep an eye on is Griffey’s 6-6 teammate Will Kirksey. He was often out front in transition and knows how to finish.
