Day3 at the Palms

By: Aaron Seybert
Our Florida editor, Aaron Seybert, has been putting in long days and nights as he covers this years City of Palms and on Day 3 the action is heating up as the teams dwindle down and Aaron was there for all the action.
(Game 12) Consolation: Duncanville (TX) 63 vs. Briarcrest (TN) 50
Game Recap: The Duncanville Panthers bounced back from being upset by Winter Park last night, like all good teams tend to do, to pick up the Saturday morning win against Briarcrest (TN) and Leslie McDonald, 63-50. The 6’5” McDonald, struggled to get much of anything going early thanks to the defense of Duncanville and junior guard Jamison Sterns. He only had 2 points going into the last quarter, but used a late surge to bring his team to within 9 in the last few minutes, as he finished with 16 for the game. The Panthers jumped out to as much as a 24-8 lead at one point in the first half behind senior forwards Roger Franklin and Shawn Williams. Williams had 10 points and 8 rebounds at the break, and finished with 18 and 12 for the game. Franklin, who is signed to play at Oklahoma State next fall, had 15 points in the first half, and finished the game with 23 total points on 9 for 13 shooting from the field and 3 for 5 from long-range. Briarcrest’s Greg Wooten and Johnny Williams played well in the loss. Wooten kept the game from getting completely out of hand in the first half, scoring 10 of the team’s 16 first half points, finishing with 15 for the game. Johnny Williams scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half, and finished the game shooting 8 for 13 from the field. Another player worth mentioning is Duncanville junior forward Perry Jones. Jones, who is committed to Baylor, didn’t put up a gaudy stat line, finishing with 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 blocks on 3 for 3 shooting, but he is a guy who could very easily be a one and done type prospect with a bit more strength and work on his interior offensive game. He’s long and athletic, runs the floor well, has a soft touch with range to the arc, and has a ton of upside. Duncanville will be back in action of Monday afternoon at 1:45 pm against American Heritage, and Florida signee Kenny Boynton, with Boynton needing 46 more points to break the all-time record for the City of Palms tournament held by local legend Teddy Dupay. Briarcrest will face off against Ft Myers Dunbar at 10:15 am on Monday in a challenge round contest.

(Game 14) Quarterfinal: Winter Park (FL) 60 vs. Westchester (CA) 54
Game Recap: Winter Park has done it again. Behind 30 points from sophomore phenom Austin Rivers, the Wildcats handed the Comets from Los Angeles Westchester their first loss ever at the City of Palms Tourney, 60-54. The score was 35-33 with Westchester leading at the end of the third quarter with neither team really looking to have an upperhand. But in the fourth, it was time for Rivers to turn it on, as he went off for 17 of his 21 second half points, including 3 from long-range during a 13-4 Winter Park run that gave the Wildcats some breathing room to work with down the stretch. Westchester's Jordin Mayes wouldn't go out quietly though as he hit 7 points of his own in the last minute and forty-three seconds, inlcluding a falling away three over Rivers. Then with 23 seconds left, Mayes was fouled by Rivers on a three point attempt from the corner and went to the line and made 2 of the 3 free attempts, putting the score at 56-54 Winter Park's advantage. Those would inevitably be the Coments last points as four more points by Rivers sealed the deal. Mayes finished with a team-high 20 points on 8 of 23 from the field, but only 1 for 10 from long-range. Robert Lovaglio played solid again for the Wildcats pulling in a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with his 13 points, on 6 of 9 shooting. The 6'4" junior guard won't wow you necessarily but he does a lot of good things whether it be from the wing or high post. He had three key baskets in the fourth that he finished in traffic. Also worth mentioning, Westchester's junior guard/forward Kareem Jamar had a solid all-around game. The 6'4" Jamar finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds, including 2 of 3 from behind the arc and 5 of 6 from the foul line.
Key Players/Stats:

(Game 15) Quarterfinal: St. Patricks (NJ) 77 vs. Word of God (NC) 69
Game Recap: St. Patricks is widely regarded as one of the best programs in the country on a yearly basis. Well, they proved why in the mid-afternoon game against the nation's #1 player, John Wall, and Word of God as they controlled Wall enough to come away with the 77-69 win despite playing without the suspended Dexter Strickland, a North Carolina signee. The duo of St. Patricks sophomores Mike Gilchrist and Derrick Gordon combined for 57 points, on 22 for 36 shooting from the field. Gilchrist is what basketball purist would call a "coach's dream." Not only does he have McDonald's All-American talent, but he is usually the hardest working guy on the floor on both ends of the court, blocking 7 shots and corralling 14 rebounds in this game. He is still in need of some fine tuning on his wing skills, having committed 7 turnovers, because at 6'7, it could hender him in the paint as he moves up to the next couple levels if he does not get any taller. St. Pat's focused on using a 3-2 zone and getting back quickly in transition to limiting the crowd pleasing fast break dynamo, Wall, to only a couple flashy moments. It was the key to the win, as even though Wall finished with 21 points on 8 of 19 shooting, but he also had 7 turnovers and most amazingly not even 1 assist. However, he took one drive down the lane in traffic, rising up for a cocked back tomahawk jam that sent the crowd to it's feet. He is freakishly fast, while under control still, and uses that combined with his length and strength to get by any defender in the country in a one on one situation. Word of God junior, and NC State commit, C.J. Leslie bounced back from a opening day sub-par performance to score 20 points on 5 for 9 from the field and 10 for 17 from the FT line, to go along with a team-high 8 rebounds, attacking the rim aggresively throughout the night. Word of God sophomore Dezmine Wells (6'4", G/F) may not be to the talent level of a Gilchrist, but he is very solid and has shown that through two games in the tourney thus far. He followed up an 18 pt and 12 rebound effort on Thursday with 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field.
Key Players/Stats:
St. Patricks 77
*Mike Gilchrist (10-15 FG, 10-10 FT, 30pts, 14reb, 7blk)
*Derrick Gordon (12-21 FG, 3-4 FT, 27pts, 4reb, 4stl)
Word of God 69
*John Wall (8-19 FG, 1-5 3PT, 21pts, 3reb, 0ast, 7to)
*C.J. Leslie (5-9 FG, 0-1 3PT, 20pts, 8reb, 1to)
*Dezmine Wells (6-9 FG, 12pts, 10reb)
(Game 16) Sunshine Series: Montverde Academy (FL) 72 vs. Deerfield Beach Zion Lutheran (FL) 59
(Game 17) Quarterfinal: Wheeler (GA) 101 vs. Lincoln (NY) 84
Game Recap: Lance Stephenson a.k.a "Born Ready" wasn't ready enough, in their match-up with Marietta Wheeler (GA), who posted the first 100 point game of the 2008 tourney, as his team went down 101-84. Stephenson scored nine points in the first 6 minutes, but struggled after that to find any kind of rhythm, and with that the Railsplitters from Lincoln couldn't sustain any runs large enough to over come the 7th ranked Wheeler squad led by seniors Ari Stewart (6'7", F, signed to Wake Forest), Richard Powell (6'8", F, signed to NC State), Tahj Tate (6'3", G, Unsigned), and junior Phil Taylor (5'9", G), who combined for 91 total points between the four of them. Taylor also added 7 assists with only one turnover, while Howell also added a game-high 12 rebounds. Although Stephenson (6'6" G) was not able to take over the game, his stat line looked good with 26 points and 5 rebounds on 9 of 19 from the field and 6 for 7 from the foul line, but only made 1 of 6 from beyond the arc. Another key stat to note, Lincoln only managed two steals the entire game, which is unusual for a squad that usually use's turnovers to score on the break. And without any extra transition opportunities, Lincoln could not gain the momentum the New York squads are known for using to overcome better teams.
Key Player/Stats:
Wheeler 101
*Tahj Tate (8-14 FG, 1-1 3PT, 7-7 FT, 24pts)
*Phil Taylor (9-18 FG, 8-9 FT, 26pts, 7ast, 1to, 4stl)
*Ari Stewart (10-16 FG, 3-3 3PT, 25pts, 8reb)
*Richard Howell (6-14 FG, 4-5 FT, 16pts, 12reb)
Lincoln 84
*Lance Stephenson (9-19 FG, 1-6 3PT, 7-8 FT, 26pts, 6reb)
*Darwin Ellis (5-14 FG, 4-8 3PT, 16pts, 6ast, 4to)
(Game 18) Quarterfinal: Mater Dei (CA) 72 vs. Roman Catholic (PA) 70
Game Recap: The saying of "save the best for last" rang true on Saturday as the nation's consensus #1 team got their first test of the tournament and oh was it an exciting test. The Cahillites from Roman Catholic School in Philadelphia gave the Monarchs everything they could handle and then some, but in the end David Wear's inside game and UCLA signee Tyler Lamb's outside game was two points better than what Roman Catholic could offer, as the Monarchs squeaked out with the 72-70 win. The game looked like it may get out of hand for a few moments in the first half, but the Philadelphia boy's showed their grit and managed to keep the halftime deficit at a manageable 41-32 margin. They got it going quick in the second half, using a 15-2 run to start the third quarter to take their first lead of the game at 46-44. From there it was a battle till the end, with the final points of the game coming on two Tyler Lamb (6'3" SG) free throws following a reaching foul called on Cahillites junior guard Rakeem Brookins. Down the stretch, North Carolina signee, 6'10 David Wear, took advantage of the fact that Roman Catholic center, 6'8 Anthony Mayo, had fouled out earlier in the fourth, leaving no one over 6'7 for the Cahillites. David made at least 4 back to the basket scoring moves over the smaller defenders, and his twin brother and fellow UNC signee, Travis Wear, made some scrappy plays on the boards down the stretch as well. Travis finished with a game-high 11 boards, including 7 on the offensive end. Brookins, gets my nod for performance of the day when you factor in the competition, finishing with a game-high 27 points, shooting 12-20 from the field despite the fact that he was giving up nearly a foot in heighth everytime he attacked the basket. His confidence in his jumper showed as he was able to give Roman Catholic a shooting threat with standout guard and Villanova signee, Maalik Wayns, continuing to struggle from the outside, going 0-6 from long range and 6 of 22 overall. Wayns still managed to put in 20 points on the night thanks to the moments where he used the dribble to get anywhere he wanted, which also led to his 9 assists compared to only 2 turnovers. For the Monarchs, Gary Franklin (6'3" PG) didn't have an outstanding offensive showing but defensively he used his size well to give Wayns problems when trying to shoot the ball, and finished with a modest 14 points, on 5 of 11 shooting before fouling out in the last minute of the game.
Key Players/Stats:
Mater Dei 72
*Tyler Lamb (5-11 FG, 1-4 3PT, 8-8 FT, 19pts, 5reb)
*David Wear (9-14 FG, 18pts, 8reb, 2blk, 1to)

Roman Catholic 70
*Rakeem Brookins (12-20 FG, 3-8 3PT, 27pts, 4stl)
