Catholic takes 11th Region Title in Kentucky State Tourney

By: Nathan McCauley
Richmond, Ky.- 6’6 senior Jordan Smart (Vandy- walk on) hit eight 3-pointers to lead Lexington Catholic to a 79-63 win over Bryan Station in the 11th Region Final, earlier tonight.
Lexington Catholic started the game on an 11-0 run, thanks in large part to a well-executed full-court press, and expanded their lead to 18 points by early in the second half.
Bryan Station’s 5’9 junior Montell Morones, who finished the game with 26 points (8-16 from the field and 7-12 from behind-the-arc), hit a 3-pointer midway through the third quarter to cut Catholic's lead to 12, but that would be as close as his team would get.
The Knights did an excellent job of shutting down Station's 6’1 senior Shelvin Mack (Butler), who got into early foul trouble and managed only six points before exiting the game (with a cramp in his right leg) with five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Besides Smart’s white-hot outside shooting, the winners got help from 6’6 seniors Nathan Novosel and Taylor Stewart (Air Force) who combined for 38 points and 12 rebounds. 6’3 junior point guard Vee Samford chipped in with 10 points and eights assists.
The win advances Lexington Catholic to the Sweet 16 of the Kentucky state tournament which will be played at Rupp Arena later this month.
