Adidas May Classic: Top Performers

Bloomington, In.- HoopsReport.com national scout , Darnell "Tate" Johnson, was in Bloomington (IN) last weekend for the Adidas May Classic and passed along this in-depth report covering the event's top performers.

2008 Adidas May Classic Top Performers

Christian Watford (6’8”, WF, 2009, M33M) - Watford was definitely one of the top two performers at the Classic. He is a smooth ball handler and has excellent range on his jumper for a player his size and he proved this weekend that he has no problem taking over a game when his team needs it.  One of the highlights of the tournament was his performance against the Shining Stars-Price.  With his team trailing by 21 points midway through the final quarter, Watford took over and reeled off 14 straight points to get his team back in the game.  The comeback fell just short, but his 38 points (including 17 in the 4th quarter), 8 rebounds and 5 assists left a big impression on all the scouts in attendance.  We hear that Memphis is the frontrunner for his services at this time, but sources close to the M33 program tell us he is keeping his options open.

Dominique Ferguson (6’8”, PF, 2010, Chicago Express)– Ferguson showed with his play at AMC why scouts are calling him a potential future lottery pick.  The big guy was unstoppable around the basket this weekend where his tenacity is second-to-none.  He posterized his defender on more than one occasion and was equally impressive on the other end of the court where he was quick to throw a soft shot attempt back into the stands.  We were also impressed with the way he consistently knocked down his midrange shot attempts all weekend.  He posted a double-double in every game he played.  If Ferguson continues his improvement, expect his high school, Lawrence North (Indianapolis), to be in the hunt for a national championship the next couple of years.  There is no-doubt that the University of Kentucky has locked-up a good one with this guy.

Mason Plumlee (6’11”, PF, 2009, Indiana Elite One) – Indiana Elite is one of the top programs in the nation this AAU season, thanks in large part to the play of this future Blue Devil.  At AMC, Plumlee showed-off his whole arsenal. He scored with hook-shots, dunks, three-pointers, you name it. He has a lot of skill for a player 6’11”, and we were especially impressed with his ball-handling ability.  He has a lot of the traits that make Kyle Singler so good.  If Plumlee continues his outstanding play into the summer look for Indiana Elite to have a real shot of cutting down the nets at the Adidas Super 64 in late July.

Tracy Abrams (6’1”, PG, 2011, Chicago Express)- Every year there is a guard that comes out of nowhere and blows-up on a national level (think Jon Wall), and in the class of 2011 it looks like that player could be Tracy Abrams.  The last time HoopsReport.com saw Abrams play was last June at the Fab Frosh All-American Camp when we said that he is one of the best young players in Illinois.  After watching him this weekend, we’re not only convinced that he’s one of the best young players in Illinois, we think he’s one of the best young players in America.  Playing with the 17U Chicago Express, Abrams was often times the most impressive player on the floor, even though he was usually the youngest.  He got around defenders at will, showed off a nice jumper and made good decisions.  We spoke to two people that coached Derrick Rose in high school, Luther Topps and Reggie Rose (Derrick’s brother), and they both said that they see a lot of the same attributes in Tracy that they saw in Derrick at the same stage.  And like Derrick Rose, we expect Abrams to be a McDonald’s All-American when his time comes… and when that happens remember you heard the name first at HoopsReport.com.

Jordan Crawford (5’7”, PG, 2009, Shining Stars-Price)- This diminutive guard stole the show this weekend while putting his team on his back and helping them to wins over some of the elite teams in the country.  Against the M33M Ballers, Crawford scored 38 points, dished out 8 assists and came up with five steals while helping his team to the upset.  He orchestrated the game like a true quarterback.  In the next round against the monstrous front line of the SoCal All-Stars (who’s roster sports several high D1 prospects), Crawford stood out as the best player on the court.  Crawford will likely be overlooked at the high-major level because of his size, but mid-majors that understand that there have been a number of smallish point guards that have made a huge splash on the college level should check this guy out while he’s still available.

Maurice Sutton (6’11”, C-PF, 2008, Indiana Elite LNO) - Sutton showed this weekend why he is one of the most sought-after big men left in the class of 2008. Sutton played with a passion that I haven’t seen in a while. He was a factor in every game he played and dominated at both ends of the floor. His offensive arsenal was impressive as he scored with both hands with both finesse and power moves. The knock on Sutton was that he was soft and didn’t always played hard, but it seems like he has gotten past that and is ready to take his game to next level. He will be a welcomed asse at whatever school he decides on.

Colt Ryan (6-foot-4, SG, 2009, Indiana Elite One) - This sharpshooter showed why he has leaped from being a mid-level to a major prospect. He is one of the best shooters we’ve seen on the AAU circuit this spring. He has now expanded his game by driving to the basket more and occasional dishing out dimes. He also was putting noticeably more effort on the defensive side of the ball than he has in the past.

LaDonte Henton (6’5”, WF, 2011, Michigan Mustangs)- This 6’5 freshman showed why at the end of the summer he will have offers from offers from every major powerhouse in the Midwest. Playing 17u you would have never known this kid was a freshman. He was cool under pressure and even drained a game-winner in one contest. He showed there nothing he can’t do on the offensive end, by either slashing to the basket, draining a three or hitting the offensive glass. There might be a lot of other freshmen getting more pub than this guy, but, believe us, Henton takes a back-seat to none of them.

Leonard Washington (6’6”, PF, 2008, M33M) – Even though he showed up late, it was better late than never as Washington was simply a man amongst boys. When he was doubled and tripled teamed he still got his shot up and finished. He got to the basket at will and his range on his jumper is getting better. He also played with a tremendous amount of intensity. Washington feels like every ball that comes off the glass is his. Washington is one of the most sought after players left in the class of 2008 and for good reason, as we expect him to be an impact freshman no matter where he goes.

Terone Johnson (6’2”, SG, 2010, Indiana Elite LNO) Johnson showed why people are comparing him to Eric Gordon. When T wanted to, he got to the basket at will. His mid-range game is sick and he has good range and nailed some threes. He also did a fine job of getting his teammates involved. Despite playing up in the 17U division, he “oohed and ahhed” the crowd on numerous occasions. He has been on our radar for a minute and by the end of the summer he should be on everybody else’s.

Other Noted Performers:

Marques Teague (Spiece Indy Heat, PG, 2011): Teague showed why he is one of the most highly sought-after freshmen in the country. He is lightning quick and got to the basket at will.

Jacob Jenkins (Team Kentucky, SG, 2009): Jacob showed why he is being recruited heavily by Wisconsin. He stroked the three from all over the court with unlimited range.

Alex Guana (Michigan Mustangs, C, 2010) This big-man has good hands and showed the ability to score on the inside and outside. He definitely puts pressure on the defenses.

James Pointer (Chicago Express, PG, 2009) Pointer is the typical electrifying Chicago point guard. He might not have ideal size (5’9), but he can get to the hole at will and when he gets there he finishes with bad intentions. He put up big numbers this weekend. If he doesn’t make it to a major and winds up at a mid-major expect him to put up big numbers in the scoring column. And we didn’t even mention that the kid knows how to drop dimes.

Jeremiah Davis (Indiana Elite/Indiana, CG, 2011) A very strong guard for his age that got to the hole at will. His decision making was solid and he showed off a decent jumper.

Stephan Van Treese (Indiana Elite One, PF, 2009) This big man showed why he is being highly recruited by some major powers. He does everything well, plays defense, rebounds, runs the floor, scores around the basket and has a nice midrange jumper. He is very polished.

Travis Carroll (Spiece Indy Heat, PF-C, 2010) Travis showed this weekend that his mobility is catching up to his body. He moved well around the basket and showed good touch. The sky’s the limit for this big man.

Bobby Capobianco (Indiana Elite Heat, PF-C, 2009) Capobianco showed why he should be an immediate impact player when he lands on the campus in Bloomington. He was a presence inside all weekend, showing great touch around the basket while playing with much effort.

Deng Leek
(Indian Elite/Indiana, C, 2011) The 6’11” center finally put a whole tournament together. Deng showed why schools such as Georgetown, Indiana and Maryland are showing great interest in him. This weekend he contested everything around the rim, finished strong and showed good touch from midrange and the free throw line.
