All-Ohio Red trailed the New York Gauchos at halftime of the 16U championship game earlier today, but they went on a 27-6 run to open the second half that gave them a commanding lead headed into the fourth quarter and they never looked back. The final score was All-Ohio 85, Gauchos 61.
The gold medal winners were led by Ohio State-commit Jared Sullinger (6’8 Jr. PF) and Dayton-commit Juwan Staten (5’10 Jr. PG), who combined for 38 points. JD Weatherspoon (6’6 Jr. SF) chipped in with 15 points, including four electrifying dunks.
Doron Lamb (6’5 Jr. SG) led the Gauchos with 15 points.
From the Notepad:
*Jared Sullinger (pictured) is making his case as the best big man in the 2010 class. He has great foot work, good hands and a handful of polished post moves. Plus he shoots with range, rebounds and defends. What’s not to like? He made some pretty impressive outlet passes in the championship game, too, so don’t be surprised if some Kevin Love comparisons start getting thrown around. While he’s not Kevin Love, he’s pretty damn good, giving Buckeye fans just one more reason to be excited about their basketball program.
*Although New York Gauchos guard Doron Lamb didn’t have a monster game in the championship, he was still dominant in the 16U division this week. He scored 18 points in the second half of a quarterfinal game yesterday against Team Stat, while matched up against top-10 sophomore Austin Rivers, and he followed that up with a 23 point performance in the semis. He doesn’t have blazing speed or ridiculous hops, but he is smooth as silk and has a knack for putting the ball in the hole. Don’t be surprised if he’s a Mc-E-Dees All-American two years from now.
*Kenny Boynton (6’2 Sr. SG Team Breakdown) was feeling it in a bracket game today against the Arkansas Wings. He scored 18 points in the first 12 minutes of the contest and finished with 24 for the game. So who has the best shot of landing the nation’s premiere scorer? According to Kenny, seven schools are in the hunt: Memphis, Texas, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, USC and Duke.
*Fordham has a big-time recruit headed their way in Chris Gaston, who had perhaps the most memorable performance of the day when he scored 33 points in the New Jersey Shoreshots win over the Minnesota Magic. Gaston is extremely versatile as he has the skill set and ball handling ability necessary to play in the backcourt; the scoring ability to be a go-to bucket maker; and the size (at 6’7) and athletic ability to be a dangerous combo-forward. Simply put, he’s good enough to be an impact player in the ACC but he’s headed to the A-10. Who says none of the great ones slip through the cracks?
*Gerald Coleman (6’3 Jr. W BABC) might be out the rest of the tournament with a toe injury, but he has already left his mark in Orlando. The thin and long wing is looking like a legit top 25 player in the 2010 class as he has consistently put up big numbers against 17U competition all summer long. He is a dangerous slasher and had back-to-back dribble drives that ended in dunks in a game yesterday. He’s also tough to stop in transition and uses his length to finish tough plays at the rim. If you haven’t seen him play yet, go to our Scouting Videos section by clicking on the link on the left side of this page and look up his name. The kid’s stock is blowing up.
*Speaking of impressive underclassmen playing for BABC, Phil Pressey (5’8 Jr. PG) has been tremendous all week long. The smallish point guard has put on a show with his creative dribbling, speed, and court vision and his team is winning games because of it. He has also carried a chunk of the scoring load for BABC since Coleman went down with an injury, tallying 19 points in a bracket game earlier today against the Birmingham Storm. BABC was down for much of the second half in that game before Pressey hit two clutch 3-pointers to get them back in it. Out of all of the compact guards out there, this kid is the best of the bunch.
*Nike Team Florida point guard Ben Eblen (6’1 Sr.) doesn’t receive a whole lot of press, but the kid sure can play. He scored 15 points today in a tough loss to Boo Williams, taking the ball coast-to-coast for impressive scores on numerous occasions and doing a fine job running the show for his team. His two-handed dunk-tip attempt at the end of the game barely rimmed out, but would have been the highlight of the week. The well-built playmaker lists VCU as the school to beat for his services, but also mentioned Notre Dame and South Florida as programs that are making a strong push for his services. Stanford, Tennessee, South Carolina, Marquette, St. John’s, Miami, and UCF also made his list.
*DeMarcus Cousins (6’10 PF Birmingham Storm) has lived up to his top-10 ranking in the class of 2009, by scoring a combined 50 points in his team’s last two games. There have been a lot of rumors floating around that he is going to de-commit from UAB, but if that’s the case, he’s not admitting to it, yet.
*A class of 2010 sleeper to keep an eye on is Gainesville-product TJ Hall, who led Florida Elite to the semifinals of the 16U division. The 6’5 wing scored 15 points in a game against eventual champs All-Ohio while showing off the ability to finish in traffic and range on his jumper out to 3-point land. It would be worth it for college coaches to look into this guy.
*Marshawn Powell (6’7 Sr. SF Boo Williams) has really stepped his game up this summer and will find a spot in our top 50 when we update the rankings. He’s got the body and athleticism to bang inside and impact the boards and he has the skill-set to play the perimeter effectively. He’d be high on our list if we were a high-major looking to fill the small forward spot on our roster. Powell says Virginia and Arkansas are his leaders, but also listed Maryland and Pitt.
*Powell’s 6’7 teammate, Ricardo Ratliffe, is also having a fine showing in Orlando. Schools on his list include Virginia Tech, Ohio State and Providence, although he is considering prepping a year at a school like Hargrave or New Hampton.
Other Recruiting Notes:
*6’7 junior Russell Byrd of Blessed IJN, one of the hottest names in the 2010 class, has a list that includes Kentucky, Michigan State, Indiana, Notre Dame, Michigan and Iowa.
*6’2 junior guard Tyrone Garland of Philly Pride, who scored 19 points in the first half of a game earlier today, lists Temple, St. Joe’s, LaSalle, and Virginia Tech.
6’7 senior Rahlir Jefferson of Philly Pride, who scored 19 points in a game earlier today, lists St. Joe’s, Providence, Villanova, Temple, Virginia Tech, and UCF.
