By: Jeff Meadows

2010 Full Court Press Lead Guard Camp

Full Court Press Lead Guard Camp held at Gilbert Christian H.S. in Gilbert, AZ was pretty much exactly that, a fundamental camp for guards. “Before you can become a quality guard you must learn and have the fundamentals of the game” says camp director Dinos Trigonis “It’s not all about just rollin the balls out and scrimmaging”. Dinos has been coaching AAU and organizing AAU events in the southern California since 1996, also, Dinos has coached such top guards as: Baron Davis-UCLA/LA Clippers, Brandon Jennings-Milwaukee Bucks, Marcus Williams-UConn/Memphis Grizzlies, DeMar DeRozen USC/Toronto Raptors, Jrue Holiday-UCLA/76ers, Casey Jacobson-Stanford/Phoenix Suns, Tito Maddox-Fresno State/Houston Rockets, Kirk Snyder-Nevada/Minnesota Timberwolves, Jeff Trepagnier-USC/Denver Nuggets, Dijon Thompson - UCLA/Phoenix Suns, Julius Barnes-Stanford/Swedish Pro League, Hassan Adams-Arizona/New Jersey Nets, DeMarcus Nelson-Duke/Chicago Bulls, A.J. Diggs-Cal/Carlon Brown-Colorado, Errick & Derrick Craven-USC/Julian Stone/Utep, Wesley Stokes-Missouri/San Diego State, Kyle Fogg-Arizona, Darius Morris-Michigan.  “The main goal for my lead guard camps is for all participants to brush up on their fundamentals of playing the guard position” says Trigonis.

www.hoopsreport.com’s 2010 Full Court Press Lead Guard Camp Top 12 campers (in height order).

Dwayne Russell 5’10 (PG) Peoria 2012

Dwayne Russell played fairly well all weekend, Russell was very impressive in the drills and showed that he is very coachable and knowledgeable of the game, Russell has all of the intangibles but the main concern that mid to high level D1 coaches have is his body size and strength.

Kevin Saiz 5’10 (PG) Cibola (NM) 2014

Kevin is a solid (PG) that does not make many mistakes, Kevin is a heady (PG) who plays like what he is (coaches son). Look for Kevin to continue to improve and make a name for himself.

Jonathan Milligan 6’1 (PG) Case Grande 2012

Milligan may have been the most impressive guard all weekend, I watched this young man hit big shot after big shot in both Saturday and Sunday’s scrimmages, Milligan hit shots with guys in his face or when he was all alone as well as breaking his defenders down with ease and getting to the rack, I was very impressed with this young man and if he continues to play the way he did this weekend he will have a good chance at becoming a mid level D1 prospect.

Dillon Smock 6’1 (PG) Perry 2011

Dillon was impressive all weekend getting to the basket quite often and displaying his above average ballhandling abilities and knocking down the outside shot on consistent bases.

Demitius Balark 6’2 (PG) Kellis 2012

Demitrius is a mid to high level prospect who is physically and athletically inclined, Demitrius played very well all weekend using his very good speed, quickness and athletic ability to dominate his opponents, Demitrius needs to make his outside shot a little more consistent and be more aggressive on the offensive end.

Casey Benson 6’2 (PG) Corona Del Sol 2014

Casey was very impressive all weekend, Casey rained down the long 3 ball time and time again while rebounding very well on the offensive end and finishing with quite a few put backs, Casey is definitely a prospect to keep your eyes on especially considering that fact that he’s a class of 2014 kid.

Collin Woods 6’2 (PG) Horizon 2011

Collin played really well all weekend , Collin was the most athletic guard in the camp, Collin is very quick, fast and he plays very good defense, Collin is a mid to lower level D1 prospect that could easily end up at a mid to high level D1.

Sammi Brai 6’2 (G) Mesquite 2012

Sammi had a good weekend, Sammi is a rugged (G) whose game is for the most part well rounded, Sammi will continue to improve and look for Sammi to have a productive high school season this fall and a good spring.

Lawrence Pierce 6’3 (G) Peoria 2012

Lawrence has always looked impressive every time I’ve seen him, Lawrence has been under the radar for some time but I think that’s now over, Lawrence is athletic, long and wirey and plays (PG) most of the time, Lawrence is a mid to lower level prospect who has the opportunity to be a mid to high level prospect if he improves his outside shot.

Jaron Hopkins 6’3 (PG) Basha 2013

Jaron has grown 3 inches in the past year, Hopkins has a good handle and a good outside shot, Hopkins is a mid to high level prospect who should have a break out high school season this fall/winter, the biggest change that Hopkins needs to make immediately is that he must play hard at all times, once he does that he will easily be among the top 2-4 (PG's) on the west coast in his class.

Josh Braun 6’3 (G) Boulder Creek 2012

Josh is a thick, strong guard who also has a finesse style game, Josh shot the ball very well from the outside and finished very well, Josh also showed that he has a descent handle, with Josh’s work ethic he will only continue to improve.

Brendon Pineda 6’4 (W/G) Tolleson 2011

Peneda looked great on Sunday overpowering the opposition with his great size (6’4, 230lbs.), Peneda has a solid all around game which usually creates matchup problems, Peneda has a good mid range game, ability to get to the basket often and possesses pretty good handle to go along with it, Peneda’s a two (2) sport star so it’s not yet clear which direction he will go. If Peneda decides to play basketball, I project him as a lower level D1 prospect.

Best of the rest (in height order).

Montez White 5’6 (PG) Mt. View Elementary 2015

Isaiah Lopez 5’10 (PG) Agua Fria 2013

Wyatt Honstein 5’10 (PG) Santa Fe 2013

Andy Backmore 5’11 (PG) Mountain Ridge 2011

Avery Brunson 6’0 (PG) Marcos De Niza 2013

Logan Fognizs 6’0 (PG) Gilbert Christian 2012

Cameron Glasrud 6'1 (PG) NM 2012

Max Sutton 6’1 (PG) North Canyon 2011

Micheal Berry 6’1 (PG) Agua Fria 2012

Roberto Reyes 6’3 (G) Gilbert Christian 2014

Cameron Johnson 6’3 (G) Mountain Ridge 2011

Cameron Gaskin 6’3 (W/G) Mt. Pointe 2012

Conor Farguharson 6’3 (W/G) Shadow Mt. 2011

Mark Winters 6’4 (W/G) El Dorado (NM) 2012

Vamba Donzo 6’5 (W/G) Glendale 2012

Stacey Davis 6’5 (W) Fairfax 2012

 www.hoopsreport.com's Individual Awards

Best Defensive Guard: Collin Woods 6’2 (PG) Horizon 2011

Best Long Range Shooter: Mark Winters 6’4 (W/G) El Dorado (NM) 2012

Best Floor General: Dwayne Russell 5’10 (PG) Peoria 2012

Best Mid Range Shooter: Jonathan Milligan 6’1 (PG) Case Grande 2012

Best Rebounding Guard: Josh Braun 6’3 (W/G) Boulder Creek 2012

This was a very good camp that involved some excellent guard skill work which is what all young guards in training need. This was the second year for this camp in Arizona and it continues to grow (last year 60 plus and this year 80 plus) each year, I look forward to next year’s camp which I’m sure will showcase even more top prospects.
