2009 Pangos All-American Camp Report

By: Rob Taylor
By most accounts, the talent level at the 7th Annual 2009 Pangos All-American Camp was as good as or better than the talent level in the six previous camps. This year’s event was held at Cabrillo High School in Long Beach, CA. and attracted elite players from around the country. Although the majority of the players were upperclassmen (2010), there were a number of talented 2011 and 2012 kids at the event.
The three day camp tipped off on Friday with a basketball skills demonstration by Dave Miller (a former NCAA & NBA assistant coach) and the first round of camp games. Day two consisted of two additional rounds of camp games and skill sessions while day three offered the final round of games before the Top 25 and Top 50 Cream of the Crop all-star games.
Although competition is the big prize in an event like this, the 119 players who made their way to the camp were in search of the high level of exposure for which this camp is famous. Once again, Dinos Trigonis assembled both elite level players as well as an elite level of talent evaluators. Some of the big name national scouts in the building included Hoopscoop’s Clark Francis, Scout.com’ Dave Telep & Evan Danials, Rivals’ Jerry Meyer, Hoopmasters’ Van Coleman, Prep Stars’ Brick Oettinger & Rob Harrington, ESPN.com’s Joel Francisco, Slam magazine’s Aggrey Sam, Nothing but Nets’ Pat Stanwood and TJ’s Sports’ Thom Jones.
You know an event is elite when you have multiple McDonald All-American Game candidates in the gym. The headliner of the camp was Harrison Barnes, arguably the #1 player in the class of 2010. Barnes arrived at the camp with his brand new ranking and a high level of expectation. For the record, he did not disappoint! Barnes has great athleticism, a high motor and he was his team’s driving force throughout the weekend. In the Top 25 Cream of the Crop Game, Barnes continued his high level of play (26 points and 8 rebounds) and intensity on his way to Most Outstanding Player honors.
Right out of the gates on Friday, Baltimore’s Will Barton put on a high flying aerial show. Barton’s explosiveness and elite athleticism were on full display as he dominated in the initial round of games. Wake Forrest pledge Travis McKee also logged in a stellar performance in Long Beach. McKee played above the rim the entire camp, was very productive in the scoring column and he more than lived up to the hype.
As you would expect in an elite camp, the guard play was excellent as there were a number of high major floor generals in the event. In this evaluator’s opinion, the top guard in the camp was Wake Forrest bound JT Terrel out of Burlington, NC. Terrel is supper smooth, has elite level athleticism and a deadly jumper. He was arguably the best shooter in the camp and his performance in the Top 25 Cream of the Crop Game (he scored a game high 28 points) earned him Co-MVP honors.
Right behind Terrell was Joe Jackson from Memphis TN. Jackson displayed a good combination of speed and power, and over the course of the weekend, he got to the cup anytime he wanted to. Jackson’s 19 points in the Top 25 Cream of the Crop Game earned him Co-MVP honors.
In the first round of camp games Mater Dei’s Gary Franklin put on a clinic, as he had his three ball popping. In that game, Franklin knocked down 6 treys. Oak Hill Academy’s Pe’Shon Howard had a great camp and he proved to be a high energy guy who filled the stat sheet the entire weekend. In the opening round of games, Howard almost single handedly led his team to a victory with deep treys, multiple rebounds and aggressive defense. I thought Philly’s Tony Chennault logged in a solid camp, as did Trevor Releford, Royce Woolridge, Ryan Harrow, Aaron Bright, Phillip Taylor, Stevie Taylor (2011), Cezar Guerrero (2011), LaBradford Franklin and Bishop Daniels (2011).
Below is a list of the top 25 performers over the course of the weekend, including the Most Outstanding Player and the Top 25 Cream of the Crop Game MVPs.
