2008 Fab Frosh and Jr. All-American Camp

Last weekend, at the Hoop Magic Sports Academy in Chantilly, Va., Clay Dade assembled over 250 of the nation’s top middle school and freshman ball players for the 2008 Fab Frosh and Jr. All-American Camp.

The camp was played in three divisions, with rising 6th and 7th graders playing together, and separate divisions for the rising 8th and 9th graders.

All three divisions had plenty of talent but we were most impressed with the young guys as 5’4 Perry Dozier (6th grader), 5’5 Allonzo Trier (7th), 5’6 Quinton Snyder (7th), 6’1 Dylan Portwood (7th), and 5’8 Parker Cartwright (7th), among others, showed off the tools, talent and overall skill-set necessary to become big-time prospects down the road.

The 8th and 9th graded divisions weren’t quite as loaded as the younger age groups were, but that didn’t stop a number of players from making names for themselves over the weekend. 6’3 Tyree Robinson (8th grader) 6’5 Brian Bridgewater (8th), 5’6 Zavier Turner (8th), 6’5 Justin Anderson (9th), 6’6 Ricardo Gathers (9th), and 6’6 Winston Sheppard (9th) all looked like players that will make a splash nationally once they reach high school.

Below, you‘ll find scouting reports on the top rising freshmen in the camp along with player rankings in each division courtesy of Next Level‘s Darnell Johnson. College coaches wishing to get more information on any of the players listed (or other campers that we haven’t mentioned) can e-mail us at Nathan@HoopsReport.com.

Player Evaluations

D’Vaunte Smith-Rivera 6’2 G Indianapolis, In.- This man-child simply did what he wanted to on the hardwood last weekend. He got to the hole at will and used his strength to finish at a high clip. He showed good range on his jumper along with decent decision making. Some people believe he is getting by because he is so much stronger and more physically mature than his peers. But we believe he’s a monster and is only going to get better. He has very light feet for his size and when he blew past Justin Anderson with a crossover in the All-American Game and layed the ball off the glass, that was a move that had nothing to do with strength. One scout compared Smith-Rivera to the legendary Pearl Washington, who was an All-American at Syracuse in the late 80’s.

Justin Anderson 6’5 W Fredricksburg, Va.- Anderson lived up to his rep as a top 10 player in his class with his impressive play. He has a hard-to-find combination of size and skill for a player his age and he’s a high-energy athlete (the play of the week came when he threw down a highlight-reel dunk on UK-recruit Michael Avery). He has good elevation and range on his jumper and he already knows how to put the ball on the floor and create for himself. We expect him to be a big-time scorer in high school and he’s good enough to contribute as a freshman even if he ends up at a high-level program like Montrose Christian, DeMatha Catholic, or Bishop O’Connell.

Winston Sheppard 6’6 F Houston, TX- This long and athletic forward drew comparisons to everyone from Kevin Garnett to Kevin Durant. He has some swagger to his game and made some impressive no-look passes, used a sick crossover to get open on his jumper and threw down some of the nastiest dunks of he camp. He’s grown a lot over the last 18 months and that contributes to his high-level of skill. He has the raw talent and athletic ability to be an elite level prospect.

Perry Ellis6’8 C Wichita, KS- Ellis was the best big man in the camp. He rebounds, block shots, is fundamentally sound, plays with both hands and finishes around the basket. Simply put, he’s one of he most polished post players we’ve seen at this age.

Ricardo Gathers6’6 C New Orleans, LA- From a physical standpoint, Gathers was the most impressive player in the camp, drawing comparisons to a young Dwight Howard. And he used his size to dominate around the basket, but also showed flashes of skill by knocking down some shots away from he basket. He raised his stock tremendously with his play and could become one of he most sought after players in his class if he continues to develop.
