Top 10 Breakdown
1. Tennessee 25-2 (11-1 SEC)
Last Week: Beat Auburn, 89-70 at home, before knocking off previously unbeaten Memphis, 66-62 (at Memphis). This Week: At #17 Vandy on Tuesday before hosting Kentucky (the only SEC team they’ve lost to this season) on Sunday. Outlook: The Vols are the hottest team in the nation right now and they are in perfect position to land a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament-- but it won’t be easy. Away games at Vandy and Florida in addition to the rematch with Kentucky will test Coach Pearl’s team even more. Nonetheless, the way they have dominated the SEC so far and their win over Memphis makes them the deserved #1 team in the nation-- this week.
2. Memphis 26-1 (12-0)
Last Week: Beat Tulane, 97-71 (at Tulane), before suffering their first loss of the season on Saturday, 66-62, to (then #2) Tennessee. This Week: The Tigers host Tulsa on Wednesday and visit Southern Miss on Saturday. Outlook: The biggest hurdle left on Memphis’ conference schedule comes on March 8th when they host UAB, a team that nearly beat them just three games ago. But the Tigers should be heavy favorites to win that game, and every other game between now and the NCAA Tournament, giving them a much easier road to a #1 seed than any other team.
3. North Carolina 26-2 (11-2)
Last Week: Beat North Carolina State, 84-70 (at NC State), and Wake Forest 89-73. This Week: The Heels only game this week comes on Saturday when they go on the road to Boston College. Outlook: Coach Williams’ squad benefits from Kansas and Duke’s recent losses and, once again, a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament is their’s to lose. Everyone is looking forward to the March 8th rematch with Duke which should be even better than usual after the recent Coach Williams-Coach K feud.
4. UCLA 24-3 (12-2)
Last Week: Beat Oregon State, 84-49, and Oregon, 75-65. This Week: The Bruins go on the road to Arizona State on Thursday and then to Arizona on Sunday. Outlook: Coach Howland’s squad has a pair of tough away games to survive before their March 6th showdown with Stanford (a game that could decide the Pac 10 regular season title). On the bright side, this is going to be a battle tested team come tourney time.
5. Duke 23-3 (10-2)
Last Week: Lost at Miami, 96-95, before beating Saint John’s, 86-56. This Week: The Blue Devils host Georgia Tech on Wednesday before going on the road to North Carolina State on Saturday. Outlook: The Blue Devils lost two in-a-row before redeeming themselves against St. John’s keeping them on the #1 seed-bubble. They appear to have it easy until their March 8th matchup against UNC which could decide the ACC regular season title.
6. Texas 23-4 (10-2)
Last Week: Beat Texas A&M, 77-50, before beating Oklahoma, 62-54. This Week: The Longhorns go on the road this week when they head to Kansas State on Monday and Texas Tech on Saturday. Outlook: The Longhorns have won seven in-a-row and if they can make it through this week all that will stand in the way of a Big 12 regular season title will be a pair of home games against Nebraska and Oklahoma State.
7. Kansas 24-3 (9-3)
Last Week: Lost to Oklahoma State, 61-60 (at OKST). This Week: The Jayhawks go on the road to Iowa State on Wednesday before hosting Kansas State on Saturday. Outlook: Coach Self’s team drops out of the top five for the first time this season after losing two of their last three games, but this is a veteran squad and they are still in the hunt for a #1 seed and the Big 12 regular season title.
8. Stanford 22-4 (11-3)
Last Week: Beat Arizona, 67-66 (at Zona), and Cal, 79-69. This Week: The Cardinal host Washington on Thursday and #22 Washington State on Saturday. Outlook: Stanford has a tough stretch of games from here-on-out that includes a matchup against Washington State and road games at UCLA and USC. If they win those games and turn in a good showing in the Pac 10 tournament, the Cardinal could earn a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
9. Georgetown 22-4 (12-3)
Last Week: Beat Providence, 68-58 (at Providence), and Cincy, 73-53. This Week: The Hoyas host St. John’s on Wednesday before heading to #23 Marquette on Saturday. Outlook: The only blemishes to Georgetown’s record are road losses at Memphis, Pitt, Louisville and Syracuse-- and there’s no shame in that. They will attempt to avenge one of those losses on March 8th when they host Louisville in a game that could decide the Big East regular season title.
10. Wisconsin 23-4 (13-2)
Last Week: Beat Illinois, 71-57 (at Illinois), and Ohio State, 58-53 (Ohio State). This Week: The Badgers host #16 Michigan State on Thursday. Outlook: If the Badgers get past Michigan State on Thursday, wins over Penn State on March 5th and Northwestern on March 8th could be all that stands in the way of a Big 10 regular season title.
