Phoenix vs Tucson Tip-off RECAP

Tucson, AZ – This past weekend a whopping 408 high school players participated in theTucson vs. Phoenix Tip-off. There were 34 very competitive teams in this year’s event which made for some very good basketball games. There were very nice size crowds on hand and a few local born college basketball celebrities like 6’0 FR (PG) Terrell Stoglin of the University of Maryland, 6’3 FR (SG) Mike Perez of UTEP and 6’0 FR (PG) Bryce Cotton of Providence stopped by to check out the action and support their city.
“I was pleased with the support from the Tucson community” says event director Chad Groth “I plan on having more events in Tucson”. Now let’s take a look at who the TOP PROSPECTS were at the1st Annual Phoenix vs Tucson Tip-off.

TOP TEN SENIORS:
Jason Garretson 5-9 Mesquite 2011
Is one of the fastest point guards on the West Coast. Can knock down the open jumper or take it to the basket and dish for an assist. Has DI talent and is under the radar and should get an offer soon.
Frank Mgbolu 6-0 St Gregory Prep 2011
A pure point guard that is fundamentally sound, can score in transition and defend.
Lester Medford 6-0 Amphi 2011
Played very well and is consistent and will make an impact on any team. JUCO prospect.
Shakir Smith 6-1 Tucson 2011
Can play both guard positions and scores fast with his quick release. Low to Mid DI prospect that should sign in the spring.
Emilio Acedo 6-4 Salpointe 2011
Has good size for a shooting guard and can shoot deep in range, fair defender who will go late.
Roland Jones 6-4 Palo Verde 2011
The combo guard can shoot with long range and is highly athletic. Quick defender who is long in length and can get to the rim effectively. Jones is a low DI prospect.
Billy Morrison 6-5 Rincon 2011
Plays with heart and needs to work on his handles. Morrison gave verbal commitment during the event to Army as his college choice.
Brandon Burnett 6-5 AZ Prep School 2011
Mid to high major DI recruit, under the radar but will sign soon. Does it all and is very athletic, will play in the spring with the Compton Magic.
Chris Mason 6-5 St Mary’s 2011
Can play some small forward but will mature into a shooting guard with his bounce and handles he likes to attach the basket. Mason will play club with Team Metro and sign late.
Russell Droll 6-7 Catalina Foothills 2011
Looks to pass in the half court game and runs well. Active player around the basket and has skills. Plays club with Tucson Heat.
Todd Pink 6-8 Marcos De Niza 2011
Very athletic wing that can block shots and runs well in transition. Pink will be playing club with The Magic formerly known as Joe Ward All Stars.
TOP JUNIOR PROSPECTS:
Bubba Mears 5-9 Buena 2012
Up tempo point guard who can pass in traffic and knocks down mid range shots. Plays club ball with the Tucson Heat.
Joseph Monreal 5-10 Nogales 2012
Can score from anywhere and likes to shoot from outside. Plays shooting guard but needs to work more on handles. Monreal is a solid system player who is fundamental.
Kyani Dillard 5-11 Buena 2012
Dillard is a tough player who can finish on the break and one to keep an eye on.
Antonio Lillard 5-11 Amphi 2012
Crafty guard who can score in transition and has good speed.
Damen Romero 6-0 Pueblo 2012
Solid point guard who can excel on both ends of the floor. Plays with Team Tucson.
Nate Nearhood 6-1 Phoenix Country Day 2012
Can handle the point guard position and make plays. Has a nice shooting touch.
Jonathan Milligan 6-1 Casa Grande 2012
Showed good leadership and scoring ability. DI prospect that should blow up this summer and plays with Arizona Dream Team.
Hasan Tucker 6-1 Rincon 2012
Seen some flashes and should make a name soon enough. Needs to display passing ability by getting others involved but has a chance. Plays club with Arizona Dream Team.
Cesar Solis 6-1 Nogales 2012
One who can shoot from outside and one to watch?
Marc Matthews 6-2 Buena 2012
Under the radar with scoring ability and plays big at times.
Calaen Robinson 6-2 Tempe Corona 2012
The lefty PG can lead his team, score and defend. High major DI talent that will showcase his skills with Compton Magic. Robinson will be the top 2012 prospect in Arizona.
Beto Payne 6-3 San Miguel 2012
Payne was able to hit open shots and displayed his crafty passing ability for a lefty.
Luis Borbon 6-3 Pueblo 2012
Can make plays on offense and attacks the basket, good passer on the run. Plays with Team Tucson.
Vomba Donzo 6-5 Glendale 2012
Has bounce inside and can score mid range pull ups, one to watch. Plays with Arizona Dream Team.
Jacobo Monteverde 6-5 Catalina Foothills 2012
Wide body post prospect that is hard to guard in the post, can handle well and rebounds, plays club with Desert Storm of Tucson.
Terroll Wilson 6-5 Arcadia 2012
Proved why he is under the radar, does a lot on the floor that will not be in the box score.
AJ Hess 6-6 Phoenix Country Day 2012
Continued to show his shooting ability. Hess can explode off the dribble and one to watch.
Jarvis Lewis 6-6 Kellis 2012
Played very well in the showcase, Can rebound and is a strong defender. Currently has over 12 DI offers in football but can play both sports. Plays club ball with the Arizona Future.
Brandyn Herrera 6-6 Mesquite 2012
Showed his display of passing and post skills and can score in the post.
Charles Benson 6-6 Amphi 2012
Long, strong post player with upside and plays club with Desert Storm.
Christian Thompson 6-7 Arcadia 2012
Defended well and has tools and is athletic with shot blocking ability.
Danny Powell 6-7 Desert Vista 2012
Powell can play with or without the ball, likes to shoot and can defend post players because of his size. Is very strong and weighs about 235 and can score on the block. Offered already by Central Michigan but more offers will come soon. Powell will play club ball with Arizona Dream Team.
Kenny Martin 6-10 Kellis 2012
Martin runs well and plays effective inside but also likes to shoot from 19 feet. Blocks shots and is a solid DI prospect. Plays club ball with the Arizona Future.
STAND OUT LIST FOR THE CLASS OF 2013 & 2014
Deondrae Johnson 5-8 Mountain View Tucson 2013
Crafty guard who excels in transition and has upside. Plays club with Desert Storm in Tucson.
Logan Tober 5-10 Salpointe 2013
Plays very active and has a chance and should improve really fast.
Austin Sibbio 6-0 Arcadia 2013
Sibbio defends the ball well and played with confidence.
Avery Smith 6-2 Apollo 2014
Smith showed a nice mid range jump shot with ball handling ability. Plays with the AZ Swagger and is one to watch, has a chance.
Drew Bender 6-4 Pinnacle 2013
One of the best open look shooters in his class and can handle the point guard position. DI prospect that should improve his rankings this summer. Plays club with Arizona Future.
Andre Shumpert 6-6 Santa Rita 2013
Plays big and blocks shots, still growing and could hit 7 feet projected by doctors. Well advanced prospect that can run the floor and has upside, thin but can get it done. Passes well and handles well, DI prospect that should soon be hearing from schools.
Joe Boyd 6-8 Chaparral 2013
Played big in both games, rebounds well and has a turn a face game. Not athletic but works hard in the paint.
Isaac Allen 6-10 Mesa 2014
Best big of his class and has major upside, still raw but plays hard and blocks shots. Improving daily as his confidence is on its way to be a high major prospect.
