Arizona Middle School Preseason All-State Teams

By: Jeff Meadows

The IMPORTANCE of playing in CERTAIN EVENTS.

With 19 years of experience of either Coaching/Directing my own AAU program and or Organizing/Directing the top H.S. Basketball Event, I know the IMPORTANCE of playing in CERTAIN EVENTS. I’m making it my duty to educate you (parent and or player) to the IMPORTANCE of playing in CERTAIN EVENTS. Parents when you go on a job interview what are some of the questions that the interviewer asks? How many years of experience do you have in this field? Whom have you been employed with prior to this? Did you perform well at your previous jobs? How did you perform in certain situations? Well, it’s really no different in Youth/Grassroots basketball or basketball at any level. Parents and or Players, if there’s an event going on locally, regionally or nationally and there are scouts there that can give your son exposure it might be a good idea for you to see that your son or player plays in that event. If there are two (2) events that are going on at the same time and one (1) of the events have scouts there and the other one doesn’t then it might be a good idea for you to see that your player or son play’s in the event that is going to give your player or child some exposure for the simple fact that it doesn’t make sense to participate in an event where all your player or child gets out of it is a tournament tee shirt not to mention that it could be the difference between your player or child being ranked and or not being ranked and if you decide not to participate in the event(s) where the scouts are, DONT COMPLAIN ABOUT YOUR PLAYER OR CHILD NOT BEING RANKED OR NOT BEING RANKED WHERE YOU OR THEY FEEL THEY SHOULD BE RANKED. Are there players receiving college scholarships without being ranked? Of course, but your chances are much greater for you to not only get a college scholarship but get the college scholarship you want opposed to not being ranked. So Parents and or players please remember this valuable information and you CANT GO WRONG!

Arizona Middle School Preseason All-State Teams
Let me start by saying this: This year’s 8th grade Preseason All-State team selections were the hardest All-State, All-Tournament, All-Whatever selections that I’ve EVER HAD TO MAKE REGARDLESS OF CLASS because the top 10 players were are all capable of winning the MVP and or being a 1st team selection. Let me also let you know how I determine my rankings/teams. I go by the number of top flight events that the player has played in, the body of work meaning; what kind of performance did the player have in each event, how many top flight events the player participate in, School stats, school team record, what top flight events did the player NOT participate in, is the player regionally or nationally ranked and how did they play when I scouted them? All of those things come into account when I do my rankings/listings and just FYI I’ve seen each and every player that I’m listing/ranking in all age groups/grades. As far as the teams, I go by position meaning; I place each player on each team according to the position the player plays. Remember that information because I will not be posting again, EVER. Also make sure you log on to www.hoopsreport.com to view the Post Season All-State Teams/Player Power Rankings for ALL CLASSES in April. Well, enough of that stuff let’s get to what we’ve all been waiting to see, the Arizona Middle School Preseason All-State Teams, Enjoy!

FIRST TEAM At the (W) position is last year’s 7th grade Player of the Year Dorian Pickens of Explorer Middle School. Pickens is no surprise choice as a 1st teamer; he’s earned it for sure. The only concern I have about Pickens is the fact that he has missed a couple of key events which is something that he can no longer do especially with the competition being so tight in this class. Pickens has a full arsenal making him a deadly offensive weapon. Pickens has gotten himself into much better playing shape this season and it shows in his play. If Pickens wants to keep his first team selections he needs to (a) continue to play at the level he’s playing at (b) play in as many top flight events as possible. This next selection was a tough one but considering all things in to account the choice was unanimous Roberto Reyes the 6’3 (W/F) out of Willis Jr in Chandler. Although Reyes may not have lit it up at this past weekend at the California Middle MLK Classic, Reyes has played extremely well every time that I’ve seen him. Reyes stats in the www.azhoopsreport.com 8th grade Preseason All-State game read: 16 pts 5 assist 1 steal. Reyes wrapped up his 1st team selection with his performances in five (5) straight tournaments/events that I watched him play in. Reyes also played very well at Ron Colemen’s Christmas Tournament where his club team (AZ Stars) won the 14U Championship. Reyes is very athletic, fast and because of that, he’s able to defend just about every position and defend them well, Reyes also finishes at a high rate. This is my assessment of Reyes; Reyes has all of the physical attributes that a player needs, the one (1) thing that Reyes needs to add/work on is his mid range and long range shot, with it, Reyes is a clear cut top prospect without it, Reyes is mid to lower level prospect.  This next selection was a for sure one, 6’5 paint dominating, power dunking inside force Chris Davis out of Milestone Charter School. Chris is by far the most athletic player in middle school throughout the entire state of Arizona. Chris is also a monster on the offensive boards where he makes a living off of offensive put-backs. Chris sometimes has disappearing acts in games and there are other times Chris looks like he’s the best player in the state. For Chris to keep his spot on the 1st team he MUST began to play harder ALL of the time because there’s a 6’9 BIG FELLA nipping at his heels.

MVP(s) Now my basketballaholics, like I said in the pre article there could only be one (1) maybe two (2) and in this case, this year, there are two (2). This year’s Arizona Middle School Co-Preseason Players of the Year are; Rolando Rhymes the 5’10 (PG) out of University of Public Schools and Nathan Markovich the 6’0 (PG/CG) out of San Tan Jr High. Rolando Rhymes the 5’10 ultra quick, super fast, lock down defender who’s body off work along with the events that he’s played in and his performances in those events put him as one of the unanimous choices as Player of the Year. “He’s a general out there” said Coach Chris Nabors Coach of University of Public Schools “He does a great job on D, he’s a ball hawk out there, with him, are chances of going undefeated this season are very good”. Rolando has played in every major event (in or out of state), he’s never shied away from a big match up as a matter of fact, Rolando has taken on all comers. In Chad Groth’s Middle School Fall Showcase at Brophy Prep Rolando played INCREDIBLE. Rolando game stats throughout the tournament read: Game (1) 18 pts 10 rebounds 10 steals 8 assist, Game (2) 16 pts 12 rebounds 8 assist 6 steals, Game (3) 19 pts 8 rebounds 6 assist 5 steals and Game (4) 40 pts 15 rebounds 12 assist 8 steals. Rolando stats at the www.azhoopsreport.com 8th grade Preseason All-State game read: 19 pts 7 steals 5 rebounds. Rolando is the ultimate COMPETITOR, “I stay up late just about every night workin on my game, pretending that I’m playing against other top players” said Rolando. Rolando will be a top flight prospect at the next level for the simple fact that whatever team he’s on he raises there chance to win double, Rolando is a very physical, strong and athletically inclined PG who imposes his will on the opposing team’s guards over the course of the game.  Nathan Markovich the 6’0 (PG/CG) out of San Tan Jr High in Chandler (like Rhymes) Nathan has played in all of the top events (local or national) and then some. "I live to play against the top players in top events" said Nathan. Down in California at the California Middle School MLK Classic last weekend Nathan played against what was believed to have been the top 3 guards on the WEST COAST and Nathan had great performances against all three (3). Nathan is currently ranked among the top 50 players in the country by www.hoopscooponline.com and I'm sure that Nathan is going to be ranked as high if not higher when www.hoopsreport.com post their national winter rankings in a few weeks. Nathan has been at the top of his class in the country for the past two years. Nathan (like Rhymes) had a good showing at the www.azhoopsreport.com 8th grade Preseason All-State games, Nathan’s stats read: 16 pts 2 rebounds 1 steal and 1 block. Nathan is a deadly mid range/long range shooter which makes any team's defense that he plays against play him honest. Nathan has lead his school team to two (2) undefeated seasons and USC has called his school inquiring about him. I’m sure that we haven’t seen the best of Nathan yet so stay tuned, there’s more to come.

SECOND TEAM Leading the way for the 2nd team is one of the most improved players in the class of 2014: Casey Benson the 6’0 (PG) out of Kyrene Middle School. Benson is a pure point guard; Benson has played himself into the upper esculent of guards in this class which hasn't always been the case. Benson had a very good tournament this past weekend and was a very iatrical part of the AZ Gym Rats winning the Championship at the California MLK Middle School Classic which happens to be one of the top Middle School events in the country. Benson was edged out of the first team for a couple of reasons (1) I’ve only seen him play twice (one game in Chad Groth’s Fall Showcase where his club team the Gym Rats pulled out after the first game but to Casey’s credit the one game that he did play in his stats read: 19 pts 7 assist 5 rebounds, pretty darn good I must say; and at Ron Colemen’s Christmas Tournament where his team made it to the Championship game) Benson did not participate in the www.azhoopsreport.com 8th grade Preseason All-State game (All of the top 8th graders in the state were in attendance except for Benson and Tate Delaveaga). Here’s my evaluation of Casey Benson: Very smart, very heady, basketball I.Q. is off the charts, very good offensive game, can shoot the ball very well, unsure if he can defend quicker, faster guards? How good is he defensively against guards with superior speed/abilities? My advice to Casey Benson is to PLAY IN AS MANY TOP FLIGHT EVENTS LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY, DON’T SKIP ANY EVENTS THAT TOP SCOUTS ARE GOING TO BE IN ATTENDANCE if you can help it. We haven’t heard or seen the last of Casey Benson trust me on that one. Next up is the tough, gritty, hardnosed 5’10 (PG) Tate Delaveaga out of Explorer Middle School. Delaveaga is the son of a coach and it shows in his play, Delaveaga had a pretty good showing this past weekend at the California Middle School MLK Classic alongside Casey Benson, Nathan Markovich, Sam Jones etc. Also like Benson, Delaveaga missed a couple of key events that proved to be crucial in my selection process, Chad Groth’s Middle School Fall Showcase and www.azhoopsreport.com 8th grade Preseason All-State game not to mention that I’ve only seen Delaveaga  play just once at Ron Coleman’s Christmas Tournament where I felt like he had a descent showing. Look for Delaveaga to have a good season and FYI, TRY TO ATTEND OR TRY NOT TO MISS ANY TOP FLIGHT EVENTS WHERE TOP SCOUTS WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE. At 6'5 with long arms and the ability to shoot the ball from deep consistently Sam Jones out of Highland Jr High is a serious threat for all opposing teams. Jones had a stellar tournament this past weekend at the California Middle School MLK Classic where Jones seemed to be the peace that put that AZ Gym Rats team in a winning situation after having 3 "lackluster" tournament performances prior to the California Tournament. Aside from that, here's my assesment of Sam Jones. Sam is a great long range shooter but needs to be able to do more than just shoot the deep ball, with his size he needs to be able to do more, needs to learn how to create his own shot, be able to put the ball on the floor CONSISTANTLY, If Sam adds that to his game, he’s a 1st teamer for sure. I expect Jones to come out and play like a maniac after he sees this which is what any top player would or should do. Sam has not ducked competition or skipped any top events, to his credit he’s played in all of them local or national. The next prospect is new kid on the block 6’3 (PF) Elijah Casey out of Amerischools Academy. Elijah had his coming out party this past fall when he put on somewhat of a show at the www.azhoopsreport.com’s 8th grade Preseason All-State games. Elijah’s stats read; 11 pts 10 rebounds 4 blocks. It seems the more Casey plays against top flight competition the better he get’s. Casey came out of nowhere and earned his spot.  Casey is a good looking prospect that will only get BIGGER and BETTER. Next up is the 6’9 HUMAN FLY SWATTER Isaac Allen out of Brimhal Jr. Allen (like Benson) has improved worlds from a year ago this time. Allen had his coming out party at the www.azhoopsreport.com’s Preseason 8th grade Preseason All-State games this past fall where his stats read: 10 pts 14 rebounds 8 blocks. Allen is oozing with potential and as a scout I can see him getting better and better right before my eyes. Allen has and will continue to improve, look to see very good things from this young prospect in the future.

7th grade Preseason All-State teams

This year’s 7th grade class is filled with outstanding perimeter play and fairly good post play, this class is also very deep in talent. While this class is deep there are couple of players that really standout, WHO ARE THEY? First up is the BIG POWER PLAYER 6'0 Cassius Peat. Cassius is the top inside player in this class. Cassius is a very efficient inside scorer along with being a very solid defender. Next up is Chris Hokilimali out of Atkinson Middle School. Hokilimalin is a 5’9 athletic wing who can score many different ways and he’s also a very good on the ball defender. I watched Hokilimalin’s coming out party when his YMCA Select club team played against the “Dream Team” with Obi Megwa, Aaron Allen, Colten O’Brien etc. and Hokilimali single handedly got his team within a couple of points from a win against the state’s top 13U club team. Here’s my evaluation of Hokilimali; a very good athlete, offensively advanced, scores in bunches, a very good defender, good all around game. The man in the middle is none other than the Nick Cooley out of Heights Charter School. Nick stands 6’2 and not only is he very active, he’s very skilled. Nick proved that he was the top BIG FORWARD in 7th grade when he DOMINATED at the www.azhoopsreport.com preseason all-state game. Nick loves the game and it shows in his play, here’s my assessment of Nick’s game: Nick is a HIGH ENERGY PLAYER whose motor never runs on Idle, Nick has great work ethic and he’s also a terror on the boards. With athleticism being a very important part of his game Aaron Allen the 6’0 (F) out of Luke Elementary has shown that he knows how to use it well. Aaron is a pleasure to watch for a number of reasons, Aaron really get’s after it and if the defender is not careful, he might find himself on YouTube as an Aaron Allen highlight victim. Aaron is an excellent shot blocker and a huge problem for his opponents on the offensive and defensive end. This choice may come as no surprise, The Arizona 7th grade Preseason Player of the Year is the one of a kind pure (PG) out of Explorer Middle School, Brandon Hoffer. Hoffer was this year’s UNANIMOUS choice for this award. Hoffer is the kind of player that you don’t see but every so many years, Hoffer is also one of the nation’s top swimmer in his age group. Hoffer is 5’8 and has an incredible body and is an incredible athlete. In the www.azhoopsreport.com’s 7th grade Preseason All-State games Hoffer dominated so much that it was borderline strange! Hoffer’s numbers at the www.azhoopsreport.com read; 28 pts 14 rebounds 9 assist. Hoffer is definitely among the top 30-20 players in the country in his class, he’s a mini replica of STEVE NASH. Hoffer is among the top 4-5 (PG's) in the state’s class of 2014. People this young man is really that good so if you haven’t seen him, I strongly suggest that you go check him out ASAP, YOU WON”T BE DISAPPOINTED!

 6th grade Preseason All-State teams

This year’s 6th grade class ranks among the top of all classes in terms of the depth and talent level, this class is going to be a major topic of discussion for years to come. First, we have the all around talented guard Kendal Barnes. Barnes is a 5’4 (PG) that is a HUGE problem for the opposing teams. Barn’s is very quick, fast and makes very good decisions with the ball. Barn’s is a 6th grader that plays up and he’s been playing at a high level for a couple of years now and it’s going to be very interesting to see if he can sustain playing at that level. In a very deep class of some excellent guard play right now, today, Barn's is at the top of the food chain. Next up is the 5’5 (SG) Bo Bronkhurst. Bo like Barn's has been playing a very high level for over a couple of years now and looks as if he has a great chance at sustaining that. Bo comes from very good basketball stock (Father Brock) played for Arizona legendary program East H.S. and legendary Coach Royce Yuri in the 70’s. Bo will be a big and physical guard as well. Next up is the BIG MAN, the INFORCER, and the INTIMADATOR I’m talkin about Gavin Lindstrom. Gavin is 5’9 and he possesses all the intangibles of being a top tier prospects for years to come. Gavin has been the top bag man in his class for the past couple of years now so look for Gavin to continue to play well and DOMINATE his foes. Next up is the athletic and basketball savvy 5’8 forward NKiel Harry. NKiel has shown on several different occasions that he’s for real and he’s ready to be an upper esculent prospect. NKiel continues to not only play steady but every time I’ve seen him he’s played at very high levels. NKiel should continue to improve and make an impact on his class at a local and national level. This year’s choice of Arizona Preseason Player of the Year in the class of 2016 is the young versatile one out of Sicrest Elementary in Flaggstaff, AZ Devon Kirby. Kirby, the 5’9 ultra skilled and multi talented PG/CG/WF/CF/P sealed it with his performance at the www.azhoopsreport.com 6th grade Preseason All-State games where his performance was INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE. Kirby’s numbers at that event read: 10 pts 9 rebounds 4 blocks. Here’s my player evaluation of Devon Kirby:

Devin Kirby's among the top two (2) 11U or 12U players in the state. This young man possesses skills that can’t be taught, you can only be born with them. We often times miss use phrases but believe me when I say this, Kirby can do it all and play every single position on the court and not only can he play every position on the court offensively, he can defend any position as well. Look for very good things from this one in the very near future!

Look for Kirby to really make his presence felt across the state and around the country this spring/summer.

Arizona 5th grade Preseason All-State teams

It is such a joy to watch these “LITTLE FELLAS” play the game. They play with such DESIRE and LOVE that it takes you back and reminds us all why we really play or played the game, for the love. This year’s 5th grade class is a very good one and they have been a joy to scout, let’s start with Mason Stark the “LITTLE BLOND BOMBER” has been wreaking havoc on local and national travel teams for the past two (2) years. Mason is also the son of a coach which tells you that Mason will continue to get better and not peak. Mason has been the best pure shooter in his class for the past two (2) years. The biggest plus for Mason is that he worked on and improved the part of his game that was being criticized which was his ball handling and (PG) skills. Mason will continue to improve so look for this young man to always be at or near the top of his class. Next up is the wiry (PF) Bryce Fowler. Bryce is a great system and complimentary player, he’s does all of the so called “little things” and he does them very well. Bryce is a very iatrical part of one the top 11U club/travel teams in the state (11U YMCA Select). I really like Bryce’s game as a scout because he never forces anything, his game just flows. The MAN IN THE MIDDLE is Matthew Kempton. Kemtpon is a very skilled young BIG MAN that comes from very good basketball stock. To be so young Kempton has a very advanced offensive game, Kempton can put it on the floor surprisingly well and he is a very good outside shooter. I see Kempton reaching between 6’5-6’9 and if that happens we could be witnessing a young “Mark Allerie” (Brophy Prep Alumni /Duke Alumni) type player in the making. Next my true basketball fiends, is my selection for Arizona 5th grade Preseason Player of the year. It wasn’t easy, it took lots of thinking and I came up with this decision; Arizona’s class of "2017" 5th grade Preseason Player(s) of the Year are: Markus Howard and Alex Barcello. Markus Howrd is one of the most heralded players that the state has had at such a young age. Markus is a combination of SPEED, POWER, EXPLOSIVENESS and SKILL. Markus’s talent and skill level is the highest I’ve ever seen at that age but can he sustain it? Has he sustained it? Lately, I haven’t seen Markus play very much, I went to watch his team play in four tournaments and Markus only played in one (1) of them but his body of work is very solid. Will others eventually catch and surpass him? That has been the million dollar question and my answer to that is; only time will tell but for now, he’s still a young PTB’r (Prime Time Baller). Alex Barcello is a BIG TIME player whose skill level has risen to level of Markus Howards. Barcello has played extremely well the last couple of times that I’ve seen. Barcello is a top notch shooter/scorer who has a little bit of “boogie” in his game. Barcello is a very good (PG) who can score as well as run a team, he’s a one stop shop, whatever you need, he can give it to you. Look for Barcello to continue to get better.
